The story of the Maine State House began in 1827 when Governor Enoch Lincoln signed a bill naming Augusta as the state capital of Maine. Construction of the State House began soon after, with the first cornerstone being laid on July 4, 1829. The State House has undergone a number of major renovations since then, and the building that you see today is much different than the State House that was originally constructed.
Today, the Maine State House includes the State Office Building, Cultural Building, and a three-story wing that houses the State Library. A spectacular, 185-foot high dome was added to the Maine State House as part of major renovations in the early 1900s, and those same renovations were key to creating the Maine State House as you see it today. The dome is one of the most popular parts of the State House to explore, along with the Hall of Flags.
