Whether in your car, hiking along a scenic trail, or enjoying a stroll along the waterfront, there are many ways to experience the spectacular cascade of colors that comes to the Augusta area every autumn. Our real estate agents have all of the delightful details on where you can enjoy the best fall foliage around Augusta this year.

  1. The Old Canada Road – US Route 201

Running for 78 miles through the Kennebec and Moose River Valley, the Old Canada Road is perfect for anyone who wants to explore the area's beautiful fall foliage from the comfort of their car. It's one of four designated Scenic Byways located in Maine, marking a historic trade route between the United States and Canada that is still in use today. Along the Old Canada Road, you'll find a wide variety of historic Maine towns that tell the story of the state. Of course, there will be spectacular natural scenery along every mile of this road, which looks even better during fall foliage season. It's a bit of a drive, but it's easy to make stops along the way to turn your trip into a full-day adventure.

  2. Kennebec River Rail Trail – Entry Points at Water St. and Gage St., Augusta, ME 04330

As Maine celebrates its bicentennial in 2020, why not learn more about some of the historic landmarks in our area? Our REALTORS® help you get in the spirit by sharing 10 fun facts about one of Maine's most enduring symbols, the Maine State House.

  1. Augusta Beats the Competition
Maine officially became a state on March 15, 1820. At the time, Portland was named temporary capital by being the state's largest city, but many felt Maine would be better served with a more centrally located capital. Brunswick, Hallowell, Waterville, Belfast, and Wiscasset all threw their hats in the ring, but Augusta emerged victoriously.

Gardiner Food Co-Op - Sprague & Curtis Real Estate

When potential home buyers start exploring Gardiner homes for sale, one of the first things they notice is the area's small-town feel and strong sense of community. Residents here love to support small business by shopping local. That's one of the reasons the Gardiner Food Co-Op is so popular.

Not sure what a food co-op is or how it works? No worries! Our real estate agents have the inside scoop on everything you need to know!

What is a Food Co-Op?

On the surface, a food co-op works in much the same way as a traditional grocery store or food market. The storefront is open to the public, and you don't have to be a member to shop there.

The biggest difference is the fact that local residents can become cooperative owners by making an equity investment, or purchasing shares. This gives them a vote in important matters regarding the operations of the business.

Unlike a traditional stock investment, the value of the shares does not fluctuate. When excess funds are accumulated, they are typically invested back into the co-op, held as reserves, or used to support other activities approved by the shareholders. Although it's not the primary objective, occasionally excess funds are returned to members based on their use of the services.

The 35th Annual Trek Across Maine, coming up this June, puts that landscape front and center. Traversing the Kennebec Valley and passing through the capital city of Augusta, Trek Across Maine offers bicycle enthusiasts of all stripes an opportunity to see just what makes Maine so special.

Bike for a Cause

Now in its 35th year, Trek Across Maine is a three-day cycling event, with multiple route options that highlight the spectacular beauty of the Kennebec Valley. It's also the largest fundraiser in the nation for the American Lung Association and has raised more than $24 million in the years since the event started.

More than 2,000 cyclists and 750 volunteers are expected to participate in this year's event, which takes place on June 14-16. Riders start and finish in Brunswick, Maine, and have three options: a 56-mile one-day route, a 102-mile two-day route, and a spectacular 180-mile full route over three days. Those who choose to bike the two- and three-day versions of the event will have overnight accommodations provided at Bates College in Lewiston and Colby College in Waterville.
