Kennebec River

Summer in Augusta means it's time to get outside and enjoy one of our great natural resources: The Kennebec River. Flowing more than 150 miles from its headwaters at Moosehead Lake to the Atlantic Ocean, it passes right by our doorstep here in Augusta. Let our real estate agents be your guides to outdoor recreation on the Kennebec River this summer!

  • Kennebec River Rail Trail - Augusta, ME 04330
Stretching 6.5 miles along the Kennebec River's western bank, the Kennebec River Rail Trail is a perfect introduction to the river. The trail follows a former railroad bed from Augusta southward to Gardiner, passing through the community of Hallowell along the way. The trail is paved and mostly flat, making it ideal for walking and cycling, and it offers beautiful views of the river. The northern trailhead is in Augusta's Waterfront Park.

  • Paddle from Waterville to Augusta - 240 Water St, Waterville, ME 04901
The Kennebec River is ideal for paddling, and since the removal of the Edwards Dam in 1999, the section that flows through Augusta is free-flowing all the way to the ocean. One of the most popular routes is the 17-mile Kennebec River Paddle Trip from Waterville to Augusta, which offers beautiful scenery on a section of river that is calm and easily navigable under typical summer conditions. You can also shave off 8 miles for a shorter trip by putting in at the Sydney Boat Ramp in Sydney instead of the Waterville Boat Ramp.

  • Kennebec River Fishing - Augusta, ME 04330
The Kennebec River offers exceptional fishing opportunities. A wide range of fish species are available during the summer months, with numerous access points in Augusta, Gardiner and the surrounding communities. The stretch of river from Augusta upstream to around Waterville is known for excellent smallmouth bass fishing, especially during the warmer months. Striped bass also migrate up the river from the Atlantic Ocean, spawning in the river in June and July. Areas farther upriver also offer excellent fly-fishing for brook and brown trout, especially above the Shawmut Dam. Local guides, including Blue Heron Fly Fishing and Kennebec River Angler, offer guided trips.

  • Swan Island - Bowdoinham, ME 04008
Spanning 1,775 acres, Swan Island is located midstream in the Kennebec River at the head of Merrymeeting Bay, roughly 25 minutes from Augusta. The island has been preserved by the state of Maine as Steve Powell Wildlife Management Area, and it's a spectacular place to experience the wilder side of the Kennebec River Valley. Swan Island stretches 4 miles in length, and it includes hiking and mountain biking trails, abundant bird watching and wildlife viewing opportunities, as well as fishing and kayak access. Swan Island also has 10 rustic tent campsites, which are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Kennebec Whitewater Rafting - 36 Main St, Bingham, ME 04920
The Kennebec River in Augusta may be broad and meandering, but areas farther upriver offer thrilling whitewater. Several rafting outfitters are based out of the Bingham area, just over an hour north of Augusta. The Class IV Kennebec River Gorge offers the most popular rafting location, with consistent flows courtesy of Harris Station Dam. North Country Rivers, one of the premier whitewater companies in the area, offers trips on the Kennebec River from May to October, plus ATV tours and accommodations ranging from camping to luxurious lodge stays.
