The Blaine House serves as home to Maine's governor and family and has been in use as the executive mansion for almost a century. Blaine House was constructed in the early 19th century by James Hall and purchased by James G. Blaine in 1862. Blaine, at the time, served as Maine's Speaker of the House. Blaine was an important political figure in the state as well as the nation in the post Civil War era. During his ownership, Blaine made additions and changes to the home, enlarging it for adequate entertaining space.
The home played an important part in Maine's Committee for Public Safety during the First World War, and soon after became the official residence of Maine's Governor. After being remodeled by architect John Calvin Stevens, Carl E. Miliken became the first governor to reside in the home. In 1964, Blaine House was deemed a National Historic Landmark.
Tours of Blaine House can be scheduled through Maine State Museum and are available on Wednesdays and Fridays for individuals and groups.
