Augusta Old Fort Western

Old Fort Western National Historic Landmark

Finding fun and enriching activities around Augusta isn't difficult, and one of the most appealing aspects of the area is its deep historical ties. Old Fort Western is a prime example of that history, and visiting this historical site is a fantastic way to spend the day learning about Augusta's past. While our real estate agents are hard at work for you, treat yourself and find your way to Old Fort Western, one of the most fascinating places in the region.

History in the Heart of Augusta

Situated on the Kennebec River, Old Fort Western is the nation's oldest wooden fort that still stands, an ever-present reminder of days long gone. Constructed in 1754 by the Kennebec Proprietors, the fort is now a National Historic Landmark. The fort would serve as an important post for both the company and the growth of what was once the Province of Massachusetts, serving as an outpost for British Soldiers. One of Old Fort Western's primary functions was as a storehouse for supplies shipped from Boston until they were moved on to Fort Halifax. The fort was never directly attacked, and troops stationed there were mostly tasked with maintaining the fort with normal daily functions and transporting goods further north. Benedict Arnold made use of the fort during the American Revolution for a short time, replenishing supplies and making use of the fort's house as lodging for a few of his soldiers. The fort would eventually come to be used as a store for civilians and the home as a private dwelling.

Revisit Colonial Days

When you visit Old Fort Western, you'll discover a world removed from modern times, although it's just a few minutes walk to the bustling shopping and dining district on Water Street. Aside from viewing the original wooden fort, guests can expect to see characters dressed in clothing traditional to the 18th and 19th century. Plenty of artifacts from the colonial period such as farming equipment and furniture are on display throughout the site as well as goods used by civilians to trade for merchandise at the store. Immerse yourself in the daily life of the era as you watch demonstrations of various chores and activities that were once routine here. Old Fort Western also hosts historical reenactments on the grounds periodically. A small admission fee grants you access to the grounds and a tour of the fort and house. Hours vary by season, so check the official website for days and hours of
