For cyclists, it's hard to imagine a place more ripe for exploration than Maine. With countless trails and endless meandering back roads, our real estate agents think it's a truly extraordinary landscape to pedal through.
The 35th Annual Trek Across Maine, coming up this June, puts that landscape front and center. Traversing the Kennebec Valley and passing through the capital city of Augusta, Trek Across Maine offers bicycle enthusiasts of all stripes an opportunity to see just what makes Maine so special.
Now in its 35th year, Trek Across Maine is a three-day cycling event, with multiple route options that highlight the spectacular beauty of the Kennebec Valley. It's also the largest fundraiser in the nation for the American Lung Association and has raised more than $24 million in the years since the event started.
More than 2,000 cyclists and 750 volunteers are expected to participate in this year's event, which takes place on June 14-16. Riders start and finish in Brunswick, Maine, and have three options: a 56-mile one-day route, a 102-mile two-day route, and a spectacular 180-mile full route over three days. Those who choose to bike the two- and three-day versions of the event will have overnight accommodations provided at Bates College in Lewiston and Colby College in Waterville.
The Trek Across Maine course has been relatively unchanged throughout much of its 34-year history. But this year, event organizers decided to include a gorgeous section of the Kennebec River Trail. This adds several miles of secluded, paved trailways to a course that has traditionally only followed roads.
As a result, the natural wonders of the Kennebec Valley will be thrown into sharper focus than ever. Of course, rolling meadows, secluded forests and trickling streams are just part of what makes Maine a beautiful place. There are also picturesque communities like Hallowell, Farmingdale, and Gardiner, all of which will be highlighted along this year's route.
Choosing a new route wasn't easy. The course of the 2019 Trek Across Maine was meticulously planned out by a group of volunteers, including veteran cyclists, who rode the entire route before giving it their final stamp of approval.
One of the reasons we're particularly excited about Trek Across Maine this year is that the route swings right through the capital city of Augusta, including a close pass by some beautiful Augusta homes for sale. Cyclists will have a chance to explore this historic city, its vibrant Kennebec River waterfront, and varied local businesses and attractions. City officials are planning a big celebration to mark the occasion, including free live music in Waterfront Park.
The 2019 Trek Across Maine represents an excellent opportunity to explore our state's natural beauty while raising money and awareness for a great cause. Learn more about the 2019 Trek Across Maine, including how to enter or donate to the American Lung Association.
