Gardiner Food Co-Op - Sprague & Curtis Real Estate

When potential home buyers start exploring Gardiner homes for sale, one of the first things they notice is the area's small-town feel and strong sense of community. Residents here love to support small business by shopping local. That's one of the reasons the Gardiner Food Co-Op is so popular.

Not sure what a food co-op is or how it works? No worries! Our real estate agents have the inside scoop on everything you need to know!

What is a Food Co-Op?

On the surface, a food co-op works in much the same way as a traditional grocery store or food market. The storefront is open to the public, and you don't have to be a member to shop there.

The biggest difference is the fact that local residents can become cooperative owners by making an equity investment, or purchasing shares. This gives them a vote in important matters regarding the operations of the business.

Unlike a traditional stock investment, the value of the shares does not fluctuate. When excess funds are accumulated, they are typically invested back into the co-op, held as reserves, or used to support other activities approved by the shareholders. Although it's not the primary objective, occasionally excess funds are returned to members based on their use of the services.

History of the Gardiner Food Co-Op

Located in historic downtown Gardiner, the Gardiner Food Co-Op has been in operation since 2015. It began as the Kennebec Local Food Initiative, a popular local buying club. When the members realized they had a need for a storefront, they spent years fundraising, renovating the space, and developing their business model.

Today, the Gardiner Food Co-Op meets its goal of bringing Maine food to Maine tables. Shoppers enjoy the cozy and comfortable atmosphere and the selection of fresh, wholesome, and natural foods.

An Excellent Shopping Experience

The Gardiner Food Co-Op carries a wide variety of goods including meat, dairy, eggs, fresh produce, baked goods, and other grocery and household items. They also offer beer and wine and a bulk foods section. There's a cafe inside that serves prepared foods and the area's best coffee. Almost all the items you'll find at the co-op are locally-sourced and as fresh as they can be.

How to Get Started

If you want to be a part of this special community by becoming a member-owner, it's easy to get started. Visit the co-op's membership page, complete the application, and submit your payment.

Members have the advantage of owning the store where they shop, voting on important matters, and receiving exclusive store discounts and monthly specials. Whether you choose to join or shop at the co-op, you'll feel great knowing that your hard-earned dollars are staying right in your home town.
