According to Shakespeare, all the world's a stage, and he would be delighted with Theater at Monmouth, the year-round repertory company that's been entertaining local audiences since 1970. Here's a closer look at one of the most popular attractions near Monmouth homes for sale.
Theater at Monmouth was established as a way to enrich the cultural landscape around Monmouth and the state of Maine. Professional actors from across the country present innovative approaches to the works of Shakespeare and other fascinating plays, from comedies to dramas.
Five years after it was founded, Theater at Monmouth was officially recognized as the Shakespearean Theater of Maine by the state legislature. Throughout 49 years of the three-month summer repertory season, TAM has staged upwards of 340 productions, including 28 world premieres.
From the start, education has played a significant role in TAM's mission. Their goal is to foster a deeper connection to literature as a means of personal, intellectual, and creative development. Each year during the off-season, TAM conducts education tours reaching more than 15,000 students.
TAM also contributes to programs in schools and community centers with workshops and residencies for both students and teachers. One of the more popular activities is "From Page to Stage," in which students try their hand at adapting stories from fairy tales and myths into a 10-minute play.
TAM believes in the value of a strong community and takes an active role in creating one. In addition to partnerships and collaborations with the Maine Humanities Council, the University of Maine at Augusta and the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine, TAM belongs to several local chamber of commerce organizations.
The story behind Cumston Hall, home of TAM, is as engaging as the plays it hosts. In 1899, Dr. Charles M. Cumston donated funds for the construction of a town hall. The structure took only one year to complete for the total cost of $20,000.
Harry Cochrane was the painter, writer, and musician commissioned to design Cumston Hall. Cochrane incorporated an opera hall, library and caucus room along with the town office, which was the first building in Monmouth to have electric lighting.
Cumston Hall still maintains its dramatic presence in the center of Monmouth. Visitors often come to admire the Romanesque architecture, elaborate plaster carvings, fresco ceiling mural, and stained-glass windows.
Take part in TAM's 50th-anniversary celebration by attending one or more of the great shows planned for August and September.
