Ways to Declutter - Sprague & Curtis

Many of the best Augusta homes for sale offer plenty of storage space. However, one of the biggest challenges in moving is getting "stuff" from Point A to Point B. Our real estate agents advise taking a structured and systematic approach to your move. The keys are starting early and making decluttering a priority.

Most of us have more stuff than we know what to do with. Over time, it's easy to forget the things we bought and put away. Everything purchased by a person, a couple, or a family is a snapshot of needs they had at a particular time. But those needs change.

So, how can you tackle the intimidating task of decluttering before your big move?

Take a deep breath and follow these tips:

  1. Start Decluttering as Soon as You Can
The earlier you start, the less stressful the process will be, since you can tackle it at your own pace. Plus, it can offer you a fresh perspective. You might be surprised just how many things you don't use often.
  2. Incentivize Donating
To keep yourself from carting things you don't want, figure out a nearby location for donations. Many charities accept used clothes, and some will take food, toiletries, or electronic goods. Start with a "donate" pile from the beginning.
  3. Begin With One Thing at a Time
Life is easier when you discover each box you packed has some theme – usually the room the items go in. To make this easier, focus on one task at a time. Go through one section of your closet rather than trying to tackle the whole thing at once.
  4. Get Rid of Expired Goods
It's not just food that expires, but many household chemicals, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical items. Throw out anything that is past its prime – it's a matter of safety and space!
  5. Separate Essential Items
As moving day nears, it'll be time to pack up things you use every day or will need right away in your new home. This can range from toothbrushes to power tools. Whatever your essentials may be, keep them accessible in a separate box.
  6. Use Up Extras
You might find yourself with all kinds of "extras" from shampoo to foods that linger in the freezer. Make an effort to start using them early on. Perishable food and heavy chemicals are among the hardest items to move.
  7. Try the "Practicality Test"
Clothing is a category where people tend to stockpile. It's often hard to decide which items need to go, so ask yourself: "Have I worn this in the last year?" If that isn't your style, do like Marie Kondo: Ask whether each item sparks joy.
  8. Consider Professional Packing and Moving Services
If you're moving lots of heavy furniture on a tight timeline, a moving service is a must. Compare several services and be sure you understand the price scales. For example, service charging by weight or volume may be expensive if you have lots of books.

Your real estate agent can help you find the best moving strategies and put them into practice. To find out more about homes in Augusta or throughout Maine, contact us at Sprague & Curtis today.
