Cheese in the Kennebec Valley

The Kennebec Valley is known far and wide for its splendid scenery, but its best-kept secret might be the wealth of local dairies and cheeseries we have at our fingertips. And with National Cheese Lover's Day coming up on January 20th, our real estate agents are thrilled to share some of their favorite local destinations for fantastic cheese in the Kennebec Valley.

  • Winter Hill Farm - 35 Hill Farm Rd., Freeport, ME 04032
With a philosophy of eco-friendly farming practices and respectful treatment of their animals, Winter Hill Farm is a great place to get your guilt-free cheese fix this winter. The farm is nestled among the wooded hills and rolling farmland just outside Freeport, and only minutes away from these Freeport homes for sale. Their offerings include fresh, bloomy rind, washed rind, and aged raw milk cheeses, all handmade in small batches by master cheesemakers.

  • Kennebec Cheesery - 795 Pond Rd., Sidney, ME 04330
Located on more than 100 acres overlooking Messalonskee Lake, Kennebec Cheesery offers some of the best hand-crafted goat cheeses and yogurt around, including small-batch feta and caerphilly. With a herd of more than 60 well-cared-for dairy goats, Kennebec Cheesery sits on land that has been farmed continuously since 1792, right around the corner from these Sidney homes for sale.

  • Fuzzy Udder Creamery -  35 Townhouse Rd., Whitefield, ME 04353
Artisan sheep, goat, and cow's milk cheese are all on the table at Fuzzy Udder Creamery, a respected cheesery in the cozy community of Whitefield. Along with their happy and healthy herd of 50 sheep and goats, the creamery gets organic jersey cow's milk from the Milkhouse in nearby Monmouth, allowing them to create a wide-ranging selection of fresh, soft-ripened and aged cheeses. Plus, with numerous Whitefield homes for sale nearby, you never have to drive far to get your cheese fix.

  • The Milkhouse - 445 S Monmouth Rd., Monmouth, ME 04259
The Milkhouse supplies milk to several other cheesemakers in the Kennebec Valley, but their products are the star attraction at their sustainable farm. It's just south of Cobbosseecontee Lake, and very close to these Monmouth homes for sale. In addition to bottling milk and crafting yogurt from non-pasteurized organic whole Jersey cow milk and live active cultures, the Milkhouse also raises steers and pigs for meat and chickens for farm fresh eggs.

  • Appleton Creamery - 780 Gurneytown Rd., Appleton, ME 04862
You'll find cheese from Appleton Creamery at markets throughout Midcoast Maine year-round, but nothing beats visiting the farm in-person. Located a stone's throw from these Appleton homes for sale, the farm hosts special events and festivities throughout the year and makes some of the best cheese in New England. Their main offering is chevre (a French style of fresh goat cheese), but you'll also find a wide range of fresh and aged cheeses from sheep, goat, and cow's milk.
