Somerset SnowFest

Maine is beautiful year-round, but there's something about how the snow sits over the mountains that is truly magical! Locals of Somerset agree, and every year locals get together to celebrate SnowFest, an event you'll want to add to your calendar.

If you are in the area looking at Skowhegan homes for sale or want to head north after visiting Augusta homes for sale you won't want to miss SnowFest this February 28 through March 1!

Unforgettable Winter Fun

With a long and distinguished history, Somerset SnowFest takes place over the last weekend in February each year. It's an iconic family-friendly get-together where locals of Skowhegan, Canaan, and Madison enjoy cold-weather fun for the last time in the season.

This unique winter wonderland stands out with its wide variety of shows, contests, and games that anyone can participate in. The 2019 SnowFest included an ice-fishing derby, tubing, and one of the most popular attractions ever: Authentic dog sled rides!

Somerset SnowFest in 2020

Throughout the entire Northeast, only Somerset SnowFest offers its own equestrian skijoring competition. Skijoring is a traditional Scandinavian sport where a dog or horse pulls a racer on skis. Historically, it has been most popular in the snowy backcountry of picturesque Norway.

While skijoring has a big following in the Midwest, Somerset SnowFest is the premier chance to experience it up north. Competitor registration is already available for the 2020 outing, which will take the form of a team time trial race on February 29 at the Skowhegan State Fairgrounds.

SnowFest racing is done by horse and riders must be at least 14 years of age.

Prospective competitors can sign up online after reading the rules.

Somerset SnowFest 2020 Schedule

The fun kicks off Friday, February 28, with free cross-country skiing at beautiful Lakewood Golf Course, just a ten-minute journey from downtown Skowhegan. For those spending the day in town, Skowhegan Community Center offers all-day skating.

The first official Somerset SnowFest-organized event will be the Snowman Competition at The Miller's Table. This farm-to-table cafeteria is known for its courtyard garden seating and its celebration of local cultural cuisine. It sits within a historic renovated building.

On Saturday, February 29, things kick into high gear with a variety of happenings all on the shores of Lake George. The centerpiece of Lake George Regional Park will be the site of this year's ice-fishing derby starting at 6 a.m. and the box sled race starting at 9:30.

The famous Chili Cook-Off will take place toward the afternoon, and official events on the lake will end with the Family Adventure Race. From there, attention will shift over to the Skowhegan Fairgrounds for Skijor Skowhegan. Skating will still be offered throughout the day, too.

Coburn Park is the place to be on the final day of Somerset SnowFest. Dog sled rides will take place alongside hot cocoa and sledding. The last item of the day is the Winter Brunch Walk around the grounds of the Lakewood Golf Course.

As always, participants of all ages are welcome to see all Somerset SnowFest has to offer. Dogs are permitted on the Fairgrounds and during most events as long as they are on a leash.
