Augusta Libraries

Dr. Seuss wrote of Great Places where "your mountain is waiting," and there are wonderful heights waiting to be scaled at the library. Is there a more fitting way to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday than Read Across America Day?

On Monday, March 2, take the whole family for a visit to one of these amazing local libraries suggested by our real estate agents.

  1. Lithgow Public Library - 45 Winthrop St., Augusta, ME 04330
With funding that included a $9,000 gift from iconic philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the Lithgow Public Library opened in 1896. The library is named after Llewellyn Lithgow, a local merchant and book lover with a wonderfully alliterative name who bequeathed $20,000. The library has kept in step with today's technology. Computers are available for use by all residents around Augusta homes for sale, with or without a library card, and free WiFi is offered for guests using their own digital devices. Lithgow Public Library is open 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

  2. Gardiner Public Library - 152 Water St., Gardiner, ME 04345
Gardiner Public Library's stated mission is to serve as a repository for materials to provide "information, self-education and recreation" for the community. The library honors the history of the area near Gardiner homes for sale with collections featuring the works of poet Edwin Arlington Robinson and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Laura E. Richards. Trace your lineage using the extensive genealogical resources found in the Community Archives Room. Babies Love Babies is a standing playdate for infants up to three years old, held each Friday between 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Hours at Gardiner Public Library are 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. weekdays (extended hours until 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday) and 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

  3. Hubbard Free Library - 115 Second St., Hallowell, ME 04347
While the Hubbard Free Library is just minutes from Hallowell homes for sale, a visit is like stepping into a fairy tale. The picturesque building, opened in 1880, was designed to look like an English country church. Want to help your kids learn to love reading? HFL has seasonal reading programs and twice-weekly Story & Craft Time along with their unique Read to a Pet event on the second Saturday of the month. Grown-ups get their time with the HFL Book Club, held on the third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. You don't have to be a library member or even have read the book to participate. HFL is open 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday.

  4. Waterville Public Library - 73 Elm St., Waterville, ME 04901
You're sure to find what you're looking for at the Waterville Public Library, which has the largest collection of materials of all public libraries in Central Maine. The robust Business, Career & Creativity Center is a valuable resource for job seekers and budding entrepreneurs. Be sure to visit the Carnegie Gallery on the fourth floor, where rotating exhibits showcase artistic creations from the community around Waterville homes for sale. Library hours are 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday.
