Who said home improvement projects had to take a long time?

If you're thinking of putting your home on the market, you want it to stand out from other Augusta homes for sale. Making home improvements -- both large and small -- can help.

Here are some home improvement projects that can be completed in one weekend.

  1. Spray Paint your Hardware
If you want to be up to date, spraypaint your doorknobs, hinges, drawer pulls, and any other hardware to darker shades, such as bronze, nickel, or even black. Remove hardware, clean it, and degrease it; prime the surface with an oil-based primer; then spray on the paint. Seal the hardware with lacquer or clear sealer.
  2. Renovate your Closet
Got a small closet that could use some help? You can improve the look and organization with these simple steps:
    • Hang some of your clothes on a clothing rack to create more room
    • Use the space under your clothes in the closet for storage in neat plastic bins and boxes
    • Add a small dresser and shoe bins
    • Use canvas shelf dividers for bulky items including sweaters and shoes
    • Get rid of any clothing, shoes, broken lamps, or old electronic items you don't use.
  3. Clean the Lint out of the Dryer
It's not a project you can proudly display to the company, but you should feel good about doing it. And you should feel safer. Lint can work its way through a dryer over time and can create a fire hazard. A spark or static can set it ablaze. You may also notice your dryer isn't working as efficiently when it's clogged with lint.

Unplug the dryer. Clean out ducts with a vacuum. If you need it, obtain a user's manual, so you can disassemble the dryer to clean the lint thoroughly. As with everything else in the world, instructions for dryer disassembly abound online.

  4. Paint One Wall
Could one room in your home use some sprucing up? How about painting a wall -- just one -- some bright, bold contrasting color that stands out and makes a statement? You can do it over the weekend, but do choose a time when you can leave windows open to let out the fumes from the paint. Or choose water-based paint, which does not off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as much as oil-based paint does.

  5. Seal Your Home
Your home may be leaking heated air to the outdoors, and allowing cold air to enter because of minute cracks in exterior walls. It's fairly simple to seal your home. Walk around the house with a lit stick of incense. Wherever the smoke wavers -- in front of window and door frames, around baseboards, at the attic hatch, and around the entranceways for pipes, cables, and wires in exterior walls -- seal up the cracks with weatherstripping, insulation or caulk. Your utility bills should go down considerably.
