There is no place like home. But as most of us stay home, we must find new ways to connect with those we love. Luckily, there are plenty of great apps that can ease some of those pains and help you keep up with your loved ones. With most of them free and easy to use, you'll be able to bond with your favorite people from the comfort of your couch.
Our real estate agents researched for you and put together a list of apps to keep you virtually connected when you're stuck at home.
- FaceTime
FaceTime is a free app that comes preloaded onto Apple devices. The app is easy to use and allows up to 32 people to connect at a time via audio or video calls using their iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. If you don't have an internet connection, FaceTime also works on cellular connections. It is a user-friendly option perfect for those who aren't technology savvy.
- Netflix Party
If your favorite quarantine activity involves binge-watching, Netflix has got you covered. Netflix Party allows you to watch TV shows and movies online at the same time as your friends. You can download the free extension to your Google Chrome browser, choose a program, and sync up your account with other Netflix users. Using the in-app group chat function, you can comment and chat during the show.
- Zoom
Perhaps known as the go-to video conferencing app for business calls and meetings, Zoom also works great for families and friends. This app allows up to 1,000 video participants in a single session. It can be used for a virtual family get together, game night, or cocktail party. The free tier allows for unlimited one-on-one calls but places a 40-minute restriction for larger groups. Subscription prices range up to $19.99 per month, depending on your usage. Zoom allows for a lot of customization, including playful backgrounds, so you can put something fun to hide the messy room behind you.
- Houseparty
Houseparty has become the app to have while in self-isolation. It is a video chatting app that lets you connect with up to 8 people. It mimics the feel of a small intimate gathering with your closest friends. The main menu is a display of your front-facing camera. Tapping the plus button allows you to add friends by name, through contact or Facebook, or by sending them a link. Tapping the dice icon gives the game options. There's also a lock symbol that allows you to block unwanted people from wandering into your fun. Houseparty is free and incredibly simple to jump into.
- Discord
Discord is a popular app with gamers. It can be used for its text or video chat features. Because it allows for streaming, it's the perfect app for playing games with a group of friends. You just stream one user's screen to the others, and everyone gets in on the fun.
While nothing can substitute for being with friends and family in person, these apps can ease the pain of social distancing and keep you connected to those who matter most.
