Make Your Home Look Elegant

Those home improvement shows do seem to work miracles, but they come with an equally dramatic price tag. But don't worry, you can make your home look like the "after" shot of a home improvement show with just some time and elbow grease. Yours may not be the priciest of the Augusta homes for sale, but you can make it look more elegant with these tips.

  1. Make Sure to Declutter
De-cluttering is one of the most affordable and fastest ways to a better-looking home. Some clutter needs to be disposed of, but other things just need proper storage. Installing shelving is an affordable DIY project, but if you're not as handy as you'd like to be, storage ottomans or steamer trunks look chic and can store extra pillows or books. Consider donating household items or clothing in good condition to a local thrift store. You'll remove clutter while helping someone find the piece that makes their house more of a home.
  2. Create the Perfect Angle
Rearranging your furniture can give you a brand new perspective on your space. Move furniture further apart for a more airy, minimalist look, or cluster pieces together that suit a particular theme. If most of your furniture is parallel to the walls, pull a few pieces aside to create a diagonal view. It will create the illusion of greater space from certain angles.
  3. Natural Light
The finest homes seem ethereal because of their use of natural light. If you have south-facing windows, make sure that those windows have treatments that don't block out light. Sheer curtains or textured window films allow for privacy while not blocking out natural light, and are available at modest prices. Double curtain rods allow you to use heavy and sheer curtains, maximizing daytime light use and nighttime privacy.
  4. Spot Clean
Elegant homes have surfaces that seem flawless because they are well cared for. Cleaning every surface of your home with cleansers designed for the material will often make your home look brand new. But if your cleaning turns up surfaces with chipped finishes or peeling paint, repairing and repainting are affordable and simple DIY projects. Wooden surfaces are especially responsive to good care. With a gentle cleaning and polish, your hardwood furniture and floors can positively glow.
  5. Utilize Fabric for Texture
Textiles are a cheap way to hide flaws or provide a touch of contrasting color and texture. Contact a local fabric store for remnants. Cut to fit and drape across a hall table or the back of a sofa. If you have a large piece of fabric that is a work of art on its own, steam it to remove wrinkles and hang it in an area where it can be appreciated.

Our real estate agents have seen homes in every condition and at a variety of price points. No matter the age, size, or selling price, what makes a home elegant is the care that it is shown throughout its life. We'd love to talk to you about what makes your home special. Contact us today.
