Summer Bugs

Summertime has arrived which means warm air and loads of sunshine. Unfortunately, the nice weather also brings out a host of bugs. As these creepy, crawly insects roam about, they'll likely find their way into your yard and home. While artificial cleaning solutions can do the trick, many homeowners prefer not to use harsh chemicals around their property, especially if there are pets and young children in the home. Our real estate agents understand the need to eliminate summer bugs through the safest means possible. Here are a few natural remedies that may rid your home of bugs throughout the summer.

10 Common Insects Found in the Home

Although you may not see them, hundreds of small insects may be in and around your property. Some of the most common insects homeowners spot are:

  1. Silverfish
  2. Termites
  3. Spiders
  4. Crickets
  5. Fleas
  6. Cockroaches
  7. Bed Bugs
  8. Flies
  9. Ants
  10. Moths

Fleas and bed bugs can make everyone in your family, including pets, itchy while creepy crawlers like spiders, cockroaches, and Indian meal moths can give you a fright at night. To remove these pests, consider using natural remedies, most of which you can create with household products.

Simple Natural Remedies for Summer Bugs

Let's look at a few of the everyday household items that can be used to ward off a number of different pests.

Items in Your Pantry

  • Onions can be sliced up, set in a bowl of water, and placed near entrances to keep spiders away.
  • Use an orange peel, or a peel from another citrus fruit, to deter spiders as well by rubbing it along surfaces they frequent.
  • A mix of water and either chili powder or sauce will prevent crickets from entering your home.
  • Vinegar, mixed with water and lemon juice, is an effective spray to keep fleas away.
  • A few bay leaves, or even a small bay leaf or basil plant, will ward off moths.
  • White vinegar or cornmeal placed near ant trails will send them packing.

Using Items from Under Your Sink

  • The heat from your hairdryer, believe it or not, is enough to kill bed bugs and their eggs.
  • Mix a little dish soap with water and spray around areas where you see ant activity.
  • Use a jar and a little apple cider vinegar to easily trap flies. Simply put a few drops of dish soap and a little apple cider vinegar into the jar, then cover the mouth with plastic wrap and puncture a few holes to allow flies to enter and become trapped.
  • Take some of your favorite essential oils and spray your furniture to ward off mites and other critters.

Using Items in Your Garage

  • Cedar shavings, such as mulch chips, will deter silverfish.
  • Wet cardboard will attract termites, which you can then dispose of when they settle onto the cardboard.
  • Grab an empty wine bottle from your recycling bin, coat the opening with cooking oil, and place a little syrup in the bottle. Cockroaches will easily slide in but won't be able to get out.
