Declutter Tricks

Research indicates that clutter is detrimental for both your physical and mental health; not only does excess clutter allow for the build-up of dust and mold spores, but it can drain your emotional energy and contribute to feelings of depression. Clutter also impacts the appearance of your house, making it look less attractive than other Augusta homes for sale. Follow these simple tricks provided by our REALTORS® to help you tame the clutter in your home.

  1. Start Small with Your Decluttering Efforts
When your entire house is over-run with clutter, it's a little overwhelming. Don't feel like you have to declutter your whole home or even a single room in one swoop. Instead, start by dedicating a few minutes each day to decluttering. Even 5 minutes a day can make a difference in the organization and the appearance of your home.
  1. Don't Be Afraid to Throw Items Away
It's common for some people to avoid decluttering because they feel like every single item needs to be donated, sold, or given away. While it's understandable that you want someone to use your item if they can, it's also permissible to throw the item away when it's at the end of its lifespan. Trying to regift every single item can slow down your decluttering efforts. Obsolete electronics, stained or worn-out clothing, and old papers should likely be thrown away. Few individuals are likely to have a use for these items, and charities will have to spend money disposing of items that they can't actually use.
  1. Ask a Friend for Help
Not sure what items to keep? Or, do you have concerns that your home still looks cluttered? Ask a friend for help taming your clutter. Have your friend enter your home and offer their first impressions as to what items are in need of decluttering. They can help you identify shelves that look a little messy and assist you with deciding if you'll ever use an item again. You'll also have extra hands with transporting boxes and bags.
  1. Photograph an Area Before You Get Started
When spending a few minutes a day on a task, it can be hard to determine if you're actually making progress. Before decluttering an area, take a picture of the space and save it. This will serve as photographic evidence that your efforts are paying off.
  1. Deal with Every Item You Encounter
As you go through your belongings, you may encounter items that you're tempted to shove to the side and deal with later. This might include old clothing that's too small, but you have hopes of wearing it again. Or, you may encounter old craft supplies that you plan to use one day. Instead of shoving these items aside, deal with them. It's too easy to say you'll come back to an item and then never revisit its utility in your life. Make a commitment to give away, throw away, or re-locate every item that you no longer use.
  1. Give Every Item in Your House a Home
Once you know what things you want to keep, see that everything has a home. Giving every item a home will ensure that you know where it is and can easily find the item when it's time to use it.
