We could go on and on about all the reasons we love autumn in Maine. The crisp morning air, the brilliant foliage, the welcome return of flannel weather. But few things say 'fall' quite like apple picking.
Our real estate agents are blessed to live in a place with an incredible variety of orchards, farms, and farm markets where fresh apples are abundant every autumn. Here are some of our favorite places to pick apples in the Kennebec Valley:
- Lakeside Orchards and Farm Market - 318 Readfield Rd., Manchester, ME 04531
Unlike many you-pick apple spots, Lakeside Orchards is a year-round attraction thanks to their ever-popular farm market and pick-your-own fruits and vegetables that change with the seasons (peas, pumpkins, blueberries, etc.). But it's in fall that the place really shines, and families from all over the state to fill their baskets with Paula Reds, McIntosh, Cortlands, Red Delicious, and more. The orchard is nestled in the cozy community of Manchester, just a few miles from these Manchester homes for sale.
- Lemieux's Orchard - 210 Priest Hill Rd., Vassalboro, ME 04989
A perennial favorite near Vassalboro homes for sale, Lemieux's Orchard is a reliable place to fill a bushel with your favorite apple varieties. Stop by this fall for pre-picked or pick-your-own apples, and be sure to take home a gallon of their homemade cider, which is pressed fresh on the premises. They also offer hayrides in fall, as well as carriage rides in winter.
- Kents Hill Orchard - 1625 Main St., Kents Hill, ME 04349
From tart New England favorites like McIntosh and Macoun to sweeter varieties like Honey Crisp, you have a lot of choices when you pick apples at Kents Hill Orchard. Open seven days a week from August through October, Kents Hill Orchard offers 10 varieties of apples, which become available as they mature throughout the season. You can track what's currently ready for harvest through regular updates on their Facebook page, and be sure to stop in at their on-site Apple Shed Bakery for fresh pies and other seasonal baked goods.
- Bailey's Orchard - 255 N Hunts Meadow Rd., Whitefield, ME 04353
A stone's throw from Whitefield homes for sale, Bailey's Orchard is one of the region's oldest you-pick farms. They've been owned and operated by the same family for over 60 years, and raise dozens of different apple varieties. Pick-your-own season starts Labor Day weekend, but the barn is open earlier in the summer, offering apples, pears, squash, and other produce as well as honey, apple cider, fudge, and a variety of local goods.
- Mt. Nebo Orchard - 339 Wings Mill Rd., Mount Vernon, ME 04352
Under the ownership of nearby Pine Bluff Farms, Mt. Nebo Orchard offers apples, pears, plums, and a variety of other crops, with you-pick trips available every Wednesday through Saturday in September and October. The Pine Bluff Farmstore, near Mount Vernon homes for sale, is also well worth a visit, offering everything from fresh-baked donuts and apple cider to farm-raised eggs, meat, and poultry.
There's more to life in the Kennebec Valley than apple picking, but we'd be lying if we said it wasn't one of our favorite parts. Contact us to learn more about life in Augusta and the surrounding areas, and talk to our team about finding your Maine dream home today!
