Making your own wreath is a fun and simple way to spruce up your home for the holidays. Since decorations can be overpriced this time of year, our real estate agents came up with five inexpensive ways to make your own holiday wreath.
Before you get started, you'll want to head over to your local craft store and pick-up a few supplies. In addition to the base material you select (more on that below), it's usually a good idea to have an abundance of twine, pins, glue, and floral tape on hand.
- Create a Wired Wreath
Wired wreaths are both versatile and durable; however, making a wreath with a wired base may take some practice as attaching materials can be tricky. Wire bases are available in different shapes and sizes. First, choose whether you want to use a single wire (thinner wreaths) or a double wire (fuller wreaths). Then, choose your evergreen cuttings, group them into small bundles, and attach each to the base with floral wire. Be sure to make sure each bundle overlaps by half. Repeat until you have a full wreath.
- Start with Styrofoam
Making a wreath from a Styrofoam base is very easy, but its lightweight nature means it isn't always the sturdiest option. You'll want to be careful when adding heavier materials. Your first step will be to cover the Styrofoam form with paint or fabric. Then, simply use pins to attach your materials. Make sure your materials overlap and use smaller pieces to fill any gaps.
- Buy a Stylish Grapevine Base
To create a grapevine wreath, start with a bundled twig base (pre-made at the craft store). For embellishments, try bundling beautiful winter evergreens such as juniper or snowberries and attach them to the wreath's base with wire. The key to a beautiful grapevine wreath is to weave in your materials to create a natural look while leaving some of the base exposed.
- Use Straw for a Rustic Look
Straw or hay bases can make for some of the most beautiful DIY wreaths even without embellishments. You can pick these up at any local craft store. Straw can be a softer material, so you may need more fasteners to keep your materials attached. Strong glue or wire usually works best. Because straw adds a rustic holiday look, covering the entire base isn't always necessary.
- Use a Basic Craft Ring
Using a simple craft ring as a base can give you an endless amount of options for your DIY wreath. Once you have your craft ring, paint it green or red to match your holiday theme. Then top off your wreath with evergreen materials, leaves, flowers, ornaments, or any other holiday decoration. Just be sure to use heavy-duty glue and lightweight materials.
