Augusta Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a great way to exercise while exploring a variety of outdoor settings. Luckily, the Augusta area has some amazing trails to provide a setting ranging from a relaxing ride to a vigorous cardio workout as you take in the area's natural beauty. Whether you're just getting started or are an experienced mountain biker, you'll be able to find an area trail that matches your abilities.

With warmer weather around the corner, our real estate agents recommend visiting the following mountain biking trails near Augusta:

  1. Bond Brook Recreation Area – 25 Bond Brook Rd., Augusta, Maine 04330
Bond Brook Recreation Area comprises 270 acres of urban wilderness within riding distance of the University of Maine and is located behind the airport. It has some of the best mountain biking singletrack trails anywhere, according to the New England Mountain Bike Association. The 12 miles of trails are perfect for every level of rider, the association says, although new riders may find some areas a bit technical.

  2. Summerhaven Loop – Summerhaven Road off of Route 3, Augusta, Maine
Summerhaven Loop traverses 8 miles, and since it's a loop, you know you won't take a wrong turn. Although it isn't technical, it's fun and is a great trail for beginners to try and will take you about 2 hours to complete. Watch out for ATVs and horses, which also share the trail, and if you'd like to ride down to Tyler Pond, you can take a break to cool off there.

  3. Mount Phillip Trail – park on the north side of Route 225 across from Starbird Lane, near Rome, Maine
Mount Phillip Trail is a 1.5-mile loop in the Belgrade Lakes area. If you take it in a counterclockwise direction, you'll bear to the right when it splits. The trail then passes through a grove of mature pines and gently climbs up Mount Phillip as you bike through more trees. You'll be able to see Great Pond and the Kennebec Highlands as you reach the partial summit clearing before continuing the loop trail back to the junction.

  4. Quarry Road Trails – 300 Quarry Rd., Waterville, Maine 04901
Well known for its skiing, Quarry Road Trails also has biking trails that provide a good ride combined with excellent views. You'll be able to see beautiful woodlands as well as the Messalonskee Stream as you navigate challenging climbs. And if you're a beginner or would like to work on your mountain biking skills in a controlled environment, you'll find a pump track where you can practice.

  5. Kennebec Highlands – Watson Pond Rd., Mt. Vernon, Maine 04352
Kennebec Highlands, located in the Belgrade Lakes area, encompasses over 6,000 acres in Kennebec and Franklin counties. It has a mountain biking trail – designated as the "A" trail – that's 3.3 miles long to the lookout and 4.5 miles to McGaffey Mountain's summit. Along the way, you'll be able to cross a stream as well as an old logging trail and see views of a pond. You'll also cross Round Top trail along the way but be sure to stay on the "A" trail since biking isn't allowed on Round Top.
