Accent Wall Tips

If you've been looking at Augusta homes for sale and planning on decorating them your way, you might be seeing the walls as that perfect canvas for the accent wall you've always wanted. But if you're getting ready to sell, our real estate agents will caution you to make sure you're staging your home correctly.

An accent wall makes a beautiful addition to any home. Here are a few tips to help guide you, whether you are buying or selling.

  1. Choose the Wall Carefully
A single brightly colored wall without a plan will jar the senses. Look at the features of the room you want to spotlight and select that wall for your project. A nook, bay window, or fireplace can move to center stage with an accent color that draws your eyes to that focal point. The accent wall should frame that point, not compete with it.

  2. Know About Other Accent Options
Although paint is certainly the least expensive option, it's far from the only one. Wallpaper and decals can be visually stunning and still be easily removed. Creative designers often choose wood or stone to add a level of unique sophistication to the room. Allow your creativity to flow freely to take advantage of this exciting decorating option.

  3. Consider Lighting
Keeping in mind that your primary purpose is to draw attention to the wall, you don't want to create a dark cavern in one part of the room. Balance darker shades with lamps or sconces that keep the space inviting as well as interesting. An accent wall should be a complete vision, not a random splash of color. If one wall offers a large source of light, it will probably not be the best choice for an accent wall as the light will drown out the color.

  4. Avoid Overwhelming the Room
An area that is already busy may degenerate into chaos when you add an accent wall. Remember that the goal is to make an area stand out. Clutter is never comfortable, and you want the space to be relaxing and inviting. A single large painting in the center of the wall can extend the room, while a collection of smaller items can make it feel cramped.

  5. Utilize Color
This can be a powerful key to breaking up the monotony in an open floor plan, creating a distinction between the dining room, for example, and the living room. Make sure the wall and the furnishings complement each other, using moveable items such as rugs and throw pillows to carry out an overarching theme within the design. Subtlety is critical to maintaining the open feeling.

  6. Don't Limit Yourself to Bright Colors
As the red kitchen wall is fading in popularity, accent walls are now often made in neutral shades, only slightly darker than the primary wall color. A subtle shift in hue can still guide the eye to the primary focal point without demanding your attention. It's also important to consider the other colors in the room. Done properly, an accent wall will tie the space together. Even neutral colors can clash with their surroundings if they are not chosen carefully. Paint sample cards are free, so take plenty of choices and compare them in good light to see which ones speak to you.
