Neighborhood Tips

Adjusting to life in a new place is never easy. Our real estate agents know this better than most. We've helped many families with their home searches and know all about getting settled into a new neighborhood. Here are our team's top five tips for adjusting to life in your new town.

  1. Introduce Yourself to Your Neighbors
One of the first things you should do when you arrive at your new home is greet your new neighbors. When you see someone who looks like they aren't just passing through, say hello. Tell them your name and a little bit about yourself. Most people will offer you the same information back. Doing this breaks the ice and immediately establishes a connection between you. Even if you rarely speak after that, the door is open for future contact.

  2. Host a Housewarming Party
Once you've made an initial round of introductions, it's time to get to know your fellow residents a little better. Throwing yourself a housewarming party is a great pretext to bring everyone together for some casual socializing. This doesn't have to be an elaborate event if you're short on time, money, or energy. Just turning on some music and putting out some snacks is enough to create a fun, light-hearted atmosphere in which you and your guests can mingle.

  3. Play the Tourist
Every city or town has its own set of iconic locations, including shops, restaurants, entertainment venues, public parks, and more. The people who live in your new neighborhood know it best, so ask the locals about these places - just as you would do if you were on vacation. Most people will be delighted by your interest and will happily share their favorite hangouts. Some of them might even offer to show you around the place, giving you an opportunity to make a new friend at the same time.

  4. Go Exploring
Getting tips on local hotspots is great, but there is no substitute for exploring a new neighborhood on your own. Set aside a day (or several) and spend it exploring your new surroundings. You can do this by car if needed, but try to go on foot if you can; you'll get a more authentic experience and notice things you wouldn't if you were tucked away in your vehicle. If just wandering around doesn't appeal to you, you can make a list of points of interest from Google Maps. We've found many charming cafes, bars, book shops, and other attractions around our Augusta homes for sale using this method.

  5. Get Involved
Nearly every city offers many opportunities for you to sign up and take part in a community effort. The local community center is a great place to find all sorts of classes and activities where you can bond with fellow residents with similar interests. If you have children, consider joining the PTA or volunteering to chaperone some of their class trips; you'll get to know other parents in the area and maybe even arrange a few playdates for your kids.
