Kennebec River Rail Trail

If you've been busy exploring Augusta homes for sale, you already know there's a lot to love about living in this area. From the beautiful homes to the wide array of historic sites and outdoor activities, there truly is something here for everyone.

Our real estate agents love telling new residents about some of the area's most notable destinations - including the Kennebec River Rail Trail. This is a must-visit destination whether you're an avid outdoor enthusiast or you just want to explore the area while enjoying a bit of fresh air. Here are some of the things you'll need to know before you head out on your adventure.

What is the Kennebec River Rail Trail?

This 6.5-mile trail spans from Gardiner to Augusta. It offers all-season recreational opportunities and also provides access points to several interesting historic towns. It's a well-groomed trail with a flat asphalt surface, making it perfect for strollers, wheelchairs, and toddlers just learning how to walk. Despite being paved, spending time on the trail truly immerses you in nature.

The trail follows the railroad right-of-way that used to connect Portland to Augusta. It's the ideal place to enjoy the outdoors as you wind through wooded areas along the river. When you're ready, it's easy to head into one of the towns to explore what they have to offer and get a delicious bite to eat.

Enjoy a Range of Outdoor Activities

You can enjoy just about any outdoor activity on the trail - including walking, running, biking, rollerblading, skateboarding, and dog walking. You can also snowshoe and cross country ski on the trail during the winter months. The Friends of Kennebec River Rail Trail also holds annual 5k races, half-marathons, and marathons here.

You can expect to see plenty of wildlife on the trail - from soaring bald eagles to rare Atlantic sturgeon. Make sure to bring your camera and maybe a pair of binoculars, so you don't miss out on any opportunities to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife.

Visit Nearby Towns

The Kennebec River Rail Trail begins in Augusta's Waterfront Park and crosses through the towns of Hallowell and Farmingdale before ending in Gardiner, Maine.

If you're looking for a bite to eat, head off the Trail Junction on Greenville St. in Hallowell. This is a nice walk or bike ride, as it's only about 2.4 miles from the entrance in Augusta to Hallowell.

This old red brick city is home to several great restaurants where you can enjoy house ales and tavern food, seafood, sushi, baked goods, or even Indian cuisine. There's also a playground at the YMCA where the kids can take a break and play. Since the trail is so close to some of the best Hallowell homes for sale, you'll also want to keep your eyes peeled while you're there.

Have enough energy to continue on? The stretch of trail from Hallowell to Gardiner is approximately 4.2 miles. Along the way, you could stop off in Farmingdale. There are four access points from the trail, including Maine Ave., Pine Hill Drive, Bowman Street, and Sheldon Street.

Once you reach Gardiner, you may want to set aside some time to explore its lovely downtown area and some of the beautiful Gardiner homes for sale before heading back home.
