Kennebec Valley Winter

While winter weather might make you want to curl up in front of the fireplace with a good book, that's not your only option! In fact, if you've been exploring Augusta homes for sale, you'll quickly find that there are plenty of fun wintertime activities to enjoy nearby.

Our real estate agents love helping new residents find ways to enjoy the winter weather in Kennebec Valley. When we asked them what they would add to the "must-do" list, they all seemed to agree. Here are the top five things you'll want to check out this winter season.

  1. Snowmobiling
Kennebec Valley was made for snowmobiling! There are tons of easily accessible trails where you can enjoy the thrill of the ride, check out a frozen waterfall, and stop for a trailside lunch. There's a good chance you might see some moose or deer and at the end of the day, you can catch a beautiful sunset.

The region has hundreds of miles of well-maintained trails that are perfect for snowmobilers of all different skill levels. Whether you're looking for a family-friendly activity or you want to go out on an overnight excursion, you're sure to find a trail that's perfect for you.

  2. Ice Fishing
If you enjoy fishing in the summer, it's time to try your hand at ice fishing! Choose a sunny winter day and head out to one of the area's many frozen lakes. You can fill up your sled with fishing gear, find the perfect spot, drill your hole, and wait for the fish to bite. Some people like the quiet solitude of ice fishing alone while others prefer to grab some buddies and turn it into a fun adventure. Once you get the hang of it, you can even start signing up for some of the ice fishing derbies that are held across the state all winter long.
  1. Cross-Country Skiing
Heading out on cross-country skis is one of the best ways to enjoy a sparkling winter day in Maine. While you're out on your adventure, you'll likely come across some rabbits, foxes, and deer, and other animals while also taking in the scents of the area's balsam-scented woods. It's a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle and take some time to connect with nature.

  2. Snowshoeing
Not sure about your skiing skills? Try your hand and snowshoeing instead. This simple activity is suitable for people at just about all skill levels

All you need is a decent pair of snowshoes, a trail, and a sense of adventure! You can even rent or borrow a pair of snowshoes so you can try out the activity once before you fully commit.

  3. Somerset Snowfest
One of our favorite "don't miss" winter activities is the Somerfest Snowfest, held each February. This annual Kennebec Valley event features an ice fishing derby, downhill kayak race, kite-flying derby, equestrian skijoring competition, and a winter biathlon. If you do nothing else this winter, Snowfest offers a true taste of all the winter activities the area has to offer!
