Historic District

Maine has no shortage of charming small towns with picturesque main streets. But the small city of Gardiner really stands out, with its revitalized downtown district a stone's throw from the banks of the Kennebec River.

If you happen to be in the Kennebec Valley looking at Augusta homes for sale, then a detour to Gardiner is well worth your time. These are just a few of the hidden gems you'll find in Gardiner's historic district:

  • Johnson Hall Theater - 280 Water St, Gardiner, ME 04345
There's no better place in Gardiner to see a concert, play, or comedy show than Johnson Hall Theater. This historic arts space got its start in 1864 when it was converted from a livery stable to a performance hall. Johnson Hall Theater is just minutes from these Gardiner homes for sale, and there's always something exciting coming up on their calendar.

  • Bateau Brewing - 149 Water St, Gardiner, ME 04345
A great local brewery within view of the Kennebec Rover, Bateau Brewing can always be counted on for a hearty stout and a hazy New England IPA. It's a friendly spot right across from the historic Gardiner Public Library, with an outdoor patio where friends can gather. There are fire pits for when the air gets chilly, and Miller's Food Truck is usually there for when you work up an appetite.

  • Kennebec River Trail - Gardiner, ME 04345
Stretching 6.5 miles from Gardiner to Augusta, the Kennebec River Trail follows the banks of its namesake stream and provides one of the region's great opportunities for hiking and biking. The trailhead is located at Gardiner Waterfront Park, which is also a great spot to launch a kayak, enjoy a picnic, or do a little fishing on the river.

  • El Oso Taqueria & Gift Shop - 347 Water St, Gardiner, ME 04345
Not only is El Oso Taqueria & Gift Shop a fun, funky little gift shop and art gallery in the heart of Gardiner's historic district, but they also serve the best authentic Mexican food in town. It's an especially great place to stop on a chilly winter day and warm up with some hot Barbacoa and spiked Aqua Fresca.

  • Niche, Inc. - 307 Water St, Gardiner, ME 04345
Gardiner's home for all things musical, Niche, Inc is an eclectic locally-owned record store that offers everything from new and used vinyl LPs and CDs to musical instruments and memorabilia. They were founded out of a genuine passion for music and are also known for organizing events like local open mic nights and instrument-making classes.

  • Gardiner Food Co-op - 269 Water St, Gardiner, ME 04345
If you're looking for something fresh, local, and healthy, head to the Gardiner Food Co-op. With a mission of bringing Maine food to Maine tables, the Co-op's shelves are always packed with locally sourced pantry staples. Along with local produce, meat, and dairy, they have a great on-site coffee shop and cafe.

  • A1 Diner - 3 Bridge St, Gardiner, ME 04345
Looking very much like an eatery from another era, the A1 Diner serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a classic Worcester Diner car dating back to 1946. The food—including specialties like Greek stuffed flank steak roulade—is on a whole other level.
