If you're a collector, you're probably passionate about your hobbies, going to lengths over the years to find just the right comics, vintage glassware, coins, dolls, or other items. After going through all this effort, you not only have time and money invested but probably also have an emotional attachment in your collections. That's why when it's time to move, you'll want to make sure your treasured items arrive at your new home safely.
Our real estate agents recommend the following ways to help safely move your collectibles:
- Pack your collection while staging your home.
When you're selling your home, you want as little clutter as possible in it. That means that if your collections are on display, you'll want to pack them before staging your home for sale. They'll be distracting to potential buyers, and personal items such as these can make it more difficult for buyers to picture themselves living in your home. They can also make your home feel less roomy.
- Determine which - if any - pieces you no longer want.
You might decide to pass your collection along to someone else rather than moving it with you, or you may want to sell or donate some pieces before moving. Local trade shows, eBay, Amazon, or other online stores can be good places to sell your pieces to an international market. Museums also sometimes accept donations that are in line with their collections.
- Document your pieces.
Take an inventory of your collections and take pictures of every item, showing each from several different angles. This will help ensure your collections are complete and undamaged before the move and will help with any insurance claim you might need to make if any items are lost or damaged during the move. It also helps to gather any receipts and documents related to your pieces and back them up either with digital or paper copies.
- Gather your supplies.
You'll need sturdy boxes as well as stickers that notify movers that their contents are fragile. Most collections, especially those with breakable items, will need to be surrounded by layers of bubble wrap, packing peanuts, blankets, or towels to help cushion them during the move. And finally, make sure you have markers so you can label each box with its contents.
- Pack carefully.
Make sure you don't overload boxes and increase the risk of them being dropped. Layers of packing peanuts or household linens can help protect your pieces from the side of the box and from having contact with one another. If your collections need any special care, such as silica packets for items that can be damaged by moisture, make sure to include those. And if you're packing a truck on your own, make sure you don't put very heavy boxes on top of those holding your collections. Otherwise, notify the movers of any special instructions you have for the boxes.
