Merrymeeting Bay

Maine is filled with unique places, but even in a state as wild and beautiful as ours, Merrymeeting Bay stands out. A freshwater tidal estuary located where the Kennebec River meets the Gulf of Maine, it's a body of water unlike any other.

It's also a perfect place for a wild outdoor adventure. Our real estate agents are eager to share their favorite locations for fishing and boating on and around Merrymeeting Bay!

  • Swan Island - 7 Swan Island Landing, Richmond, ME 04357
A large island that lies midstream in the Kennebec River, Swan Island is generally considered to be the head of Merrymeeting Bay. Accessible only by boat, the island is directly across the river from the town of Richmond, and the most common way to reach the island is to launch a canoe or kayak from Richmond's waterfront, not far from these Richmond homes for sale. Swan Island is crisscrossed by hiking trails and features a public campground. Waters around the island provide excellent angling for smallmouth bass and northern pike.

  • South End Park - South End Park, 347-399 Washington St, Bath, ME 04530
Several fish species make annual runs from the ocean up through the Gulf of Maine and into the Kennebec River through Merrymeeting Bay. One of the most significant is striped bass, also known as stripers or rockfish, which arrive every year around June, and usually stay until October. South End Park in the city of Bath is one of the better spots to fish for stripers from shore, and there are also launch facilities less than a mile down the road at South End Boat Ramp. Several local charter services also offer guided striper fishing trips.

  • Leighton's Smelt Camps - 350 Browns Point Rd, Bowdoinham, ME 04008
During the dead of winter, when much of Merrymeeting Bay is locked under a thick layer of ice, an epic smelt run takes place. As these fish surge up into the Kennebec River from the Atlantic Ocean, local smelt camps like Leighton's Smelt Camp offer a chance to fish for these small but scrappy fish through the ice. Leighton's camp offers heated ice shanty and ice fishing gear rentals.

  • East Side Landing - 50 Howard St, Augusta, ME 04330
The city of Augusta lies a little over 20 miles up the Kennebec River from Merrymeeting Bay. One of Maine's most vibrant cities, it also offers several excellent places to access the water within walking distance of these Augusta homes for sale. One of the best places to start is East Side Landing, which provides an ample stretch of public riverfront for bank fishing, as well as boat launch facilities.

  • Pleasant Pond - Thorofare Rd, Litchfield, ME 04350
Spanning a little over 740 acres, Pleasant Pond is a body of water along Cobbosseecontee Stream, which empties into the Kennebec River in Gardiner, Maine. It's one of the best fisheries in the area for pickerel, yellow perch, and largemouth bass. Other warm-water game fish such as smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, and black crappie are also present. A public boat launch with bank fishing access is located at the south end of Pleasant Pond on Thorofare Road.
