Bond Book Mountain Biking Trails
Bond Brook Recreation Area spans 270 acres of rolling, hilly terrain between its namesake stream and Augusta's airport. Within that rugged, beautiful landscape are approximately 10 miles of single-track mountain biking trails.
The trails range in difficulty from beginner to advanced and provide some of Maine's most exciting mountain biking, with an abundance of hair-raising twists and turns. All told, there are dozens of individual trails and connectors, which can be biked in countless configurations. The trails have a natural surface ranging from dirt and forest floor to rocks and ledges.
Bond Brook Recreation area is just a short bike ride from the University of Maine at Augusta campus and only a 5-minute drive from Downtown Augusta. It's also convenient to numerous Augusta homes for sale, with multiple parking areas and access points along Bond Brook Road and Tall Pines Way.
The trails in Bond Brook Recreation Area are always changing and being developed. They are maintained largely by volunteers in local mountain biking organizations like Augusta Trails.
Bird Watching at Bond Brook
Bond Brook Recreation Area has also gained a reputation as one of the best spots for bird watching in Augusta, Maine. The area has a uniquely diverse habitat, which allows it to support a wide range of bird species, including some that are seldom seen in the Kennebec Valley.
Prairie warblers, field sparrows, brown thrashers, and eastern towhees have all been spotted in Bond Brook Recreation Area, making this one of the northernmost places to see these species. Willow and alder flycatchers share habitat in certain parts of the park, and at least 135 total species have been observed here.
Adventure for All Seasons
No matter the season, there are ways to enjoy Bond Brook Recreation Area. Hikers share the trails with mountain bikers year-round, and fall is an especially beautiful time to experience the trails as the leaves change. Pets are allowed but must be leashed at all times.
Winter recreation is also a major attraction. Five miles of trails are groomed in winter as Nordic ski trails and are designed to allow one-way traffic only for safety. Other trails throughout the recreation area are open to snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fat-tire winter biking.
