Augusta Snowshoeing

Due to Maine's ideal winter weather, amateur snowshoeing is quite popular around Augusta. Our real estate agents are pleased to report you will find many outdoor areas to practice snowshoeing, no matter your level of skill or experience.

Here are a few of the top places to have a snowshoeing adventure near Augusta homes for sale:

  • Augusta Nature Education Center – See the Website for Location Information in Augusta, ME
Operated by the nonprofit Augusta Nature Club, the Augusta Nature Education Center is perhaps the top destination for snowshoeing in the state. Open since the 1960s, the park has had plenty of time to develop a complete network of trails that support snowshoeing, skiing, sledding, walking, hiking, and biking. There are more than five miles of trails in all, spread across 175 acres of forest and meadow.

  • Viles Arboretum – 153 Hospital Street, Augusta, ME 04330
Viles Arboretum is one of the leading botanical gardens in the region. Welcoming guests seven days a week from dawn until dusk – and operating 100% free of charge – it is highly accessible for guests of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. At the Visitor Center, you will find a complete collection of equipment rentals for biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Various educational events also take place.

  • Bond Brook Recreation Area – See the Website for Location Information in Augusta, ME
Bond Brook Recreation Area is unusual in local snowshoeing activities because it takes the form of an "urban wilderness" area. It is fully owned and maintained by the City of Augusta itself. There are about six miles of single-track trails with tempting opportunities for mountain biking, snowshoeing, or simply walking. Five miles of Nordic ski trails have also been developed, with more anticipated soon.

  • Jamie's Pond – Jamie's Pond Road, Farmingdale, ME 04344
Jamie's Pond (also called Jimmie Pond) is a 107-acre pond jointly operated by the local townships of  Manchester and Farmingdale, minutes from Farmingdale homes for sale. During the warm season, it is known for brook trout, rainbow smelt, and small and largemouth bass at a maximum depth of 75 feet. During the winter, it becomes a preferred place for skating, snowshoeing, and general fun in the snow.

  • Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary – See the Website for Location Information in Lewiston, ME
Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary is a 450-acre wildlife preserve hailed for its profusion of native bird species. While it is just as beloved in spring and summer due to its remarkable birds, winter brings out new ways to enjoy the sanctuary. Try out walking, hiking, or snowshoeing, or attend a Wednesday Bird Walk with a guide.
