Colby College Museum of Art

When we have clients looking at Augusta homes for sale, we often recommend that they stop by the Colby College Museum of Art while they're in the area. Founded in 1959, the museum is now home to more than 10,000 works of art. The associated sculpture garden and terrace are also enjoyable to explore. Admission is free, and the museum is open to all. If you are considering a visit, here are some of the current exhibits you can expect to see.

  • Take the World Into Your Arms
Take the World Into Your Arms is an exhibition of the work of Ashley Bryan and Paula Wilson. This duo explores the symbiosis between people, nature, and culture with their multi-media creations.

Much of Bryant's work features woodblock prints, colored glass, and collages. Wilson explores more intimate questions of personal identity and is often the subject in her own work. She uses a lot of silk screening and plays with light and form. This exhibit will be on display until July 31st, 2023.

  • Naeem Mohaiemen: Grace
Naeem Mohaimen: Grace is a pair of works by a creator whose experience as a family caregiver shaped his view of the world. The exhibit features the film Jole Dobe Na, or "Those Who Do Not Drown". It also features the film "Grace," which comments on sustainable burial grounds and burial practices.

This work will be on display at Colby College Museum of Art until April 23, 2023.

  • All in One: Selections From the Alex Katz Foundation Collection
All in One: Selections From The Alex Katz Foundation Collection
features artwork that celebrates polyphony, a type of musical harmony that is created when multiple melodies overlap. Each piece of art has its own beauty, but when they come together, they create a unified work with a powerful effect.

Artists whose works are featured in this collection include Murray Reich, Joel Shapiro, Ellen Phelan, and Lynda Benglis. The exhibit will be on display until June 11, 2023.

  • Time and Tide Flow Wide: The Collection in Context
If this will be your first time visiting the Colby College Museum of Art, you absolutely have to check out Time and Tide Flow Wide: The Collection in Context. This is an exhibit based on the history of the museum itself, from its founding in 1959 until its initial expansion in 1979.

This exhibit reveals the relationships that allowed the museum to be founded. It also speaks to a more modern understanding of the early collections housed by the museum. This exhibit will be on display until June 11, 2023.

  • Senior Exhibition
If you visit the museum between May 4 and May 22, 2023, you will get to see the Senior Exhibition, a display of the capstone artwork created by seniors at Colby College. Enjoy mixed-media pieces, including photographs, sculptures, and prints.

In addition to the art itself, this exhibition will include a catalog of artists' statements, which tell you more about each piece, plus an analysis of the work. This exhibit has been coordinated by Bradley Borthwick, the Studio Capstone Faculty Coordinator.

The Colby College Museum of Art is located at 5600 Mayflower Hill in Waterville, Maine. We hope you get a chance to visit soon. If you're new to the area and looking for a place to live, don't hesitate to contact us soon. Our real estate agents can guide you through the house-hunting process.
