Plan a Fishing Trip on Cobbosseecontee Lake
Maine is famous for its wild outdoor attractions, from hiking and mountain biking to camping and bird watching. But Maine is especially well known for offering some of America's best fishing, and Cobbosseecontee Lake is one of our real estate agents' favorite places!
Exploring Cobbosseecontee Lake
Cobbosseecontee Lake is located just a few miles west of Augusta and a stone's throw from these Belgrade homes for sale. One of Central Maine's largest bodies of water, Cobbosseecontee is a natural glacial lake that spans over 5,500 acres and reaches depths up to 100 feet.
Anglers can catch a wide range of game fish at Cobbosseecontee Lake. The lake is mostly known for its excellent bass fishing. Both largemouth and smallmouth bass are common in the lake, with largemouths being caught mostly around shallow weed beds, while smallmouths prefer rocky areas. Bass commonly weigh 2 to 4 pounds.
Northern pike are also caught in the lake, and although these fish are considered invasive here, they're some of the largest and hardest-fighting fish around. It's possible to catch pike that measure 36 inches and weigh over 10 pounds.
The state stocks brown trout in Cobboseecontee Lake every year, and they are commonly caught in deep, cold parts of the lake. Various panfish, including yellow perch, white perch, pumpkinseed sunfish, and redbreast sunfish, are also available.
Best Fishing Times and Tactics
Cobbosseecontee Lake offers year-round fishing opportunities, and the best time of year depends on what you plan to catch. Bass fishing is usually best from late spring into summer, when the water is warm, and these fish are most active. Try fishing for bass with plastic worms, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and jigs along rocky points and the edges of weed beds.
Pike are also often caught in summer. Try casting in weedy areas around Cobbosseecontee Lake's islands and in the bays on the east side of the lake.
Trout fishing is better in spring and fall. Because trout prefer colder water than bass, they are more likely to be in shallow water early and late in the season. Brown trout also swim up into the lake's tributaries to spawn in September and October.
Winter fishing is also an option. When Cobbosseecontee Lake freezes, ice fishermen catch a variety of species through the ice.
Bank and Boat Access
Two public boat launch facilities are available on the shore of Cobbosseecontee Lake. One is located at the north end of the lake, just off Turtle Run Road in Winthrop. The other is on the southwest side of the lake, in the community of Monmouth on Launch Drive.
Anglers can also fish from the bank at either boat launch site. The rocky shoreline along Cobbosseecontee Road, at the south end of the lake, is another popular place to fish from the bank.
Several privately owned marinas and campgrounds around Cobbosseecontee Lake also offer boat launch facilities, boat rentals, and lodging that ranges from tent/RV camping to cottage and lodge rentals. Lakeside Lodge & Marina is a popular spot at the north end of the lake, along with Birches Lakeside Campground on the southeast side.
