The Kennebec River flows right by several Augusta homes for sale and offers a bunch of outdoor adventures during the summer months. Join our real estate agents in celebrating National Rivers Month this June with these great activities on the Kennebec River.
- Mill Park - 2-32 ME-104, Augusta, ME 04330
Mill Park stands as a tribute to Augusta's past and a testament to the city's resourcefulness today. Once the site of the thriving Edwards Manufacturing Mill, the property sat unused after the mill burned down in 1993. Since then, the park has become a popular attraction with the addition of a pavilion-covered farmers market and a fenced-in dog park. Four public courts are available for games of petanque, which is similar to lawn darts but uses spheres instead. Mill Park is open 24/7.
- Kennebec River Rail Trail - Capitol Park, 33 Union St., Augusta, ME 04330
The Kennebec River Rail Trail spans 6.5 scenic miles between Augusta and Gardiner, with the river remaining in sight during most of the journey. This dog-friendly paved trail is a favorite spot for walking, running, cycling, and skating. Keep your eyes peeled for osprey and bald eagles that come to the river to feed. Explore some of the shops and restaurants that are just off the trail, or simply take a break in one of the riverside Adirondack chairs. A short side trail off Capital Park provides access. The Kennebeck River Rail Trail is open daily from dawn until dusk.
- Old Fort Western - 16 Cony St., Augusta, ME 04330
Take a trip through Augusta's history when you visit Old Fort Western, which was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973. Built in 1754, the fort's strategic location atop a hill overlooking the river made it a valuable part of an expansion into the Kennebec River Valley. Tour the original garrison building and learn how it transitioned over the years into a store, private home, and tenement apartment building. Plan a family trip on June 17 for the Fort Halifax Heritage Day festivities. Hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday to Monday, expanding to daily through July and August. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $8 for ages 5-14.
- The Forks - Somerset County, ME 04985
Planning a long weekend or a multi-day trip? The Forks, with its assortment of thrilling outdoor activities, is less than a two-hour drive from Augusta. Opportunities abound for whitewater rafting, fishing, and kayaking. With an extensive system of trails for hiking, biking, and ATV riding, there's also no shortage of land-based activities. Northern Outdoors offers guided rafting trips and ATV rentals, as well as campsite and cabin rentals.
- Riverfront Barbeque & Grille - 300 Water St., Augusta, ME 04330
New England meets Southern cuisine at Riverfront Barbeque & Grille. The menu includes authentic, scratch-made barbeque such as chicken, beef brisket, and Memphis-rub ribs. For a real North-South mash-up, try the Crab & Slab, which pairs ribs and a crab cake. Customers give high marks to the sweet-and-spicy jalapeño cornbread, especially when it's complemented with honey butter. If you just want to unwind, head upstairs to the Gin Mill, an upscale bar featuring a classic speakeasy ambiance. Restaurant hours are 11:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday. The Gin Mill is open Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 3 p.m. - 10 p.m.
