Kennebec Valley

The Kennebec Valley is one of the most gorgeous parts of Maine. From its rushing rivers to its dense forests, the region is full of natural wonders just waiting to be discovered. What better time to discover them than at the end of summer when temperatures are starting to fall? Over the next month or so, we encourage you to take a brief break from looking at Augusta homes for sale and head outside. Here are some of the top adventures we recommend.

  • Paddle the Kennebec River: 50 Howard St. Augusta, ME 04330
There is a 17-mile stretch of the Kennebec River that is perfect for paddling. Start at the boat launch in East Side Boat Landing Playground on Howard Street in Augusta. Then, paddle north towards Sidney and Waterville.

This is not the easiest route to paddle, but it's approachable for anyone who has paddling experience. You'll pass Old Fort Western. Plus, expect some rapids, especially towards the northern part of the route.

  • Canoe on the Belgrade Lakes: Belgrade, ME 04917
The Belgrade Lakes are a chain of seven lakes just a few miles off Interstate 95. These lakes are stocked with trout, bass, bike, and northern perch, which makes for great fishing. However, one of the best ways to spend time on the Belgrade Lakes is in a canoe.

Launch your canoe from Long Pond, and you can spend countless hours exploring the tiny coves and islands within the lake. There are also kayaks and canoes for rent at Great Pond, one of the larger lakes near Belgrade homes for sale.

  • Hike the Kennebec River Rail Trail: Front St., Augusta, ME 04330
Park in Waterfront Park on Front Street, then set off on a hike down the Kennebec River Rail Trail. This 6.5-mile trail follows the banks of the Kennebec River, passing through Hallowell and Farmingdale before ending in Gardiner, Maine.

Visitors see lots of wildlife along this trail. Sturgeon appear in the river during spawning season, and bald eagles are spotted occasionally. If you're hungry, consider stopping in Hallowell for some lunch. There are lots of locally owned shops and restaurants to check out.

  • Golf at The Meadows: 495 Huntington Hill Rd., Litchfield, ME 04350
Golfing is a whole other way to enjoy the beauty of the Kennebec Valley. One of the best local places to golf is The Meadows Golf Club which is nearby Litchfield homes for sale. The award-winning course boasts 18 beautiful holes with a par of 69. Much of the course is wooded.

Doolin's Pub is located on-site at The Meadows and is a great place to enjoy lunch or dinner after your game. Their Back Swing Wings, which come in flavors like Parmesan Garlic and Buffalo, are a fan favorite.

Whether you prefer hiking, paddling, or hitting the green, we hope you enjoy late summer in the Kennebec Valley. If you're thinking of moving to the area, we encourage you to contact us soon. Our real estate agents will help you find the perfect place.
