Augusta Hiking

Our real estate agents know that many buyers in the Augusta area want to have plenty of room for their pets to run and play. That can mean a big backyard, of course, but it goes beyond that. When you wander through the Augusta area, you'll find plenty of trails that welcome your pets. You can both have a great adventure together!

Some of the most desirable Augusta homes for sale are just minutes away from Maine's natural wonders. The state benefits from an extensive network of carefully tended trails. Hiking, cycling, and equestrian sports are all common. For the most part, your favorite pets are always welcome when they are secured on a leash.

Let's take a closer look at just a few of your options for pet-friendly trails near Augusta:

  • Jamie's Pond Wildlife Management Area – See Website for Location Information
Jamie's Pond Wildlife Management Area sprawls across 840 gorgeous acres found in the three communities of Manchester, Hallowell, and Farmingdale. Because the trails are all networked together, you can easily choose a long or short walk. Pets particularly enjoy the area around the 107-acre pond. Anglers also favor Jamie's Pond because of the thriving population of various game fish found within.

  • Kennebec River Rail Trail – See Website for Location Information
Kennebec River Rail Trail follows the historic railway right-of-way that once connected Portland, Maine, to the capital of Augusta. The trail continues to follow the preserved tracks along the length of the Kennebec River's 120 miles. You can find the beginning of the trail beneath Augusta's Memorial Bridge, where parking and info are both available. From there, it's a journey through the countryside along the winding course of the river.

  • Bicentennial Nature Park – 48 Park Street, Augusta, Maine 04330
Bicentennial Nature Park is conveniently located just six miles from the city center of Augusta. Available from Monday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., all throughout the season, it is beloved for its wide range of fun amenities. Adults can visit for just $2, while children and seniors pay only $1. The picnic area features 30 tables and eight grills, a full swimming area with a dock, floats, and slides, boating access, bathrooms, and hiking.

  • French Mountain – See Website for Location Information
French Mountain is located just west of Waterville and a short distance northwest of the popular Long Pond. With a summit elevation of just over 700 feet, it is a more challenging hike that provides a terrific view when one reaches the top. While the trail may not be suitable for animals at the higher elevations, dogs will love a chance to parade around the foot of French Mountain, while experienced hikers can come for the breathtaking views.

  • Mt. Phillip – See Website for Location Information
Mt. Phillip is the slightly larger brother of French Mountain and is found on the other side of Long Pond. With a total elevation of 755 feet, a handful more than French Mountain, it has a thicker forested cover on the way up to the top. Many hikers love to summit both of these mountains, although it can be more difficult to see all of the views that Mt. Philip has to offer. There are no summit facilities, so be sure to prepare for the journey carefully.
