Fall Foliage Augusta

Autumn in Maine is really something special. This time of year, the Kennebec Valley is decked out in its finest colors, and numerous local parks and trails provide opportunities to enjoy the season in all its glory. These are our real estate agents' favorite places to experience fall scenery in the Augusta area.

  • Kennebec River Rail Trail - Augusta, ME 04330
A 6.5-mile rail trail that follows the river through the heart of the Kennebec Valley, the Kennebec River Trail offers an easy and accessible hike with great scenery. The trail is located within walking distance of many Augusta homes for sale, with dozens of trailheads in Augusta and neighboring communities. There are some great views of the river along the way, especially as the trees along its banks start to change colors in fall. Leashed pets are allowed, and the trail is also open to bicycles.

  • Mount Pisgah - Mt Pisgah Rd, Winthrop, ME 04364
One of the highest peaks in Kennebec County, Mt. Pisgah offers expansive views of the whole region from the fire tower at its summit, making it a spectacular place to visit in any season. It's especially impressive in fall, though the hike to the top has a few challenging sections. The peak is located within the Mt. Pisgah Conservation Area and a 2-mile loop trail provides access.

  • Bicentennial Nature Park - Nature Park Rd, Augusta, ME 04330
A beautiful park that spans about 27 acres on the shore of Three Cornered Pond, Bicentennial Nature Park is one of the best places to enjoy vibrant fall colors in a quiet, peaceful setting. In addition to several charming hiking trails through the woods, the park includes canoe and kayak access to the pond. Be aware that this particular park is only open to Augusta residents and their guests.

  • Tyler Pond - 1166 Summerhaven Rd, Augusta, ME 04330
Tyler Pond is just a few minutes drive from downtown Augusta, and this often-overlooked spot is a perfect place for a fall hike. The pond itself is surrounded by a 127-acre wildlife management area that includes a short hiking trail around the shore. The best way to explore here is aboard a canoe or kayak, which can provide some great views of the changing foliage reflected on the pond's surface. You might want to bring a fishing rod because Tyler Pond is known for its feisty brook trout.

  • Allen Whitney Memorial Forest - Scribner Hill Rd, Manchester, ME 04351
Fall is an especially beautiful time to explore Allen Whitney Memorial Forest, a 735-acre hiking area in the Kennebec Valley. Managed by the New England Forestry Foundation, the area includes roughly 7.5 miles of multi-use trails that meander beneath a dense canopy of trees. Leashed pets are allowed, and the trails are popular for mountain biking as well as winter snowshoeing.
