Augusta Children's Museum

School may be done for the summer, but things are just heating up at the Children's Discovery Museum, only minutes from Augusta homes for sale. These summer programs combine fun and learning in many popular activities.

Kids Summer Camps

  • Kids in the Woods offers all the attractions of traditional camping with hiking, mountain biking, and completing science and art projects. Sessions are 8/5-8/9 and 8/12-8/16, with daily hours from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The $250 registration fee includes an optional lunch and morning snack.

  • STEM has never been so entertaining. Kids at the Museum has a full schedule of activities focused on art, science, movement, and some old-school, open-ended play. Some activities will take place outdoors, weather permitting. Sessions are 7/8-7/12, 7/15-7/19, and 7/22-7/26, with daily hours from 9 a.m. - noon. Registration fee is $130.

  • Kids can make their mark on the museum with Ready, Set, Build! Campers are involved in designing and building an outdoor play structure that will become a permanent fixture. One session is scheduled for 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. from 6/24-6/28. The $250 registration fee includes snacks and safety equipment.

Enrollment for Kids in the Woods and Ready, Set, Build! is currently full, with waiting lists for both. If there's enough interest, the museum will re-open registration.

Toddler Power

During Toddler Power, little ones can explore their different senses, develop motor skills, and socialize with other kids. Dance parties on the museum stage provide physical activity as the kids bust out their best moves. Toddler Power takes place each Monday from 9 a.m. - noon. Admission fee is $3 per child, and reservations are not required.

Fairies and Gnomes Festival

Enjoy some Memorial Day weekend magic at the Fairies and Gnomes Festival. Kids can dress up in their fantasy finest to have their faces painted, build gnome houses, and take guided walks through the woods. Other entertainment features craft projects and music, with hot dogs and cotton candy on sale for any hungry mythical creatures. The festival is scheduled for 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, at Viles Arboretum. Admission is free, with a $5 donation recommended.

Mobile Museum

Can't make it to the museum? The museum will come to you! Throughout the summer, the Mobile Museum will be making regular appearances at local farmers' markets, bringing portable versions of their onsite activities. Each Tuesday from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m., the Mobile Museum will be stationed at Mill Park in Augusta, while every Thursday from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m., it can be found at Head of Falls.

New Exhibit Hall

Our real estate agents have saved the biggest and best news for the last. The museum's new Exhibit Hall is due to open to the public in June. The installation will include four unique zones:

  • Rural Zone features a forest highlighted by a massive elm tree named Evelyn. An adjoining research cabin provides space for further exploration.

  • STEM is the focus of Mill Zone, which is centered around the Giant Clock Tower. Kids learn about focus and motion, machines, and the process of invention through an in-depth look at the mill industries of paper-, textile-, and shoe-making.

  • City Zone incorporates an interactive Main Street to demonstrate economic principles and promote the development of social skills.

  • The Watershed adapts the "neighborhood" structure of City Zone to Maine's aquatic world.
