After looking at Augusta homes for sale, you've found the one you love. All that remains is a few tweaks and upgrades. In particular, the basement is cold, dark, and empty. You'd love to make it more comfortable and welcoming. Here are some ideas to refresh your basement this summer.
- Paint and Paneling
Choose a color or even several you likeĀ and use them to brighten up the drab walls. You can paint it all one solid color or create patterns that make the area more vibrant. Or, if you prefer a more elegant look, try wood paneling. Go to the lumber store and decide what kind and shade of wood you'd like. You can even alternate between multiple types of wood. Wood panels are fairly inexpensive, though it's more work to install than simply painting. However, it can add a cozy quality to your basement that will make the whole area seem more inviting.
- Carpeting
Stone basement floors are cold, both metaphorically and physically. They're uncomfortable to stand on, and they can make you feel like you're in a storage space, rather than a family hangout. But wall-to-wall carpeting is a great way to combat this feeling. It adds color and warmth, encouraging bare feet and giving your basement a living room feel. Or, if you can't afford to install carpeting, consider one or two large area rugs. Choose something with a fun pattern and colors that complement your walls, and place it in the middle of the room, with a couch, table, and chairs on top.
- Lighting
Basements typically don't have much natural light, making the space seem dark and drab. However, there are a number of lighting options to brighten things up. If you have a specific area that you'll use for a specific function, such as a bar or a craft table, consider hanging light fixtures to ensure it's properly illuminated. For general ambient light, try recessed lights in the ceiling, with smart bulbs that allow you to adjust lighting intensity, color, and more. Additionally, if you want a bright, cheery space, choose a lighter color scheme that will reflect the natural light and make it seem like there's more of it.
- Purpose
The look and feel of your basement depend on what you plan to use it for. Creating an entertainment room? You'll want a darker atmosphere, comfortable seating, and a large TV and sound system as the focal point. Craft and hobby room? Large tables and counters to spread things out on and plenty of shelves to store them once you're done. Think about what the function of your basement will be and let those needs inform the rest of the design.
- Divisions
If you have a larger basement, you can divide it up into different sections for different purposes. Installing a simple archway in the center of the room creates one area for television and gaming and another where you can put a crafting station or a home gym. You could even put up some makeshift walls to create a small guest bedroom. Walls and archways are fairly cheap and easy to install, but if you want something even simpler, try adding a sliding doorway to divide sections or even a set of bookshelves.
