Don't put those ice skates away just yet! Cool off with public skating sessions at Maine Ice Vault. The facility participates in the Skating Association of Maine's Learn to Skate program, with classes for ages 3 and up. If hockey is your game, practice your stick-handling and shooting skills with "shinny" pick-up games. Public session tickets are $7.25, and Shinny tickets are $11.50. Both must be purchased online, and skate rental is available for $6 on a first-come-first-served basis. Visit the website for current schedule.
- Augusta Parks and Recreation - 22 Armory St., Augusta, ME 04330
Do the members of your family all have different preferences for athletic activities? Chances are you'll find all of them available through Augusta Parks and Recreation. Their summer schedule includes programs in sports as varied as soccer, track & field, fencing, tennis, and kickball. Wee ones can join in on the fun at Toddler Time, a program for ages 2-4 held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:30 a.m. Visit the website for registration information, including times, venues, and prices.
- Day of the Dog - Various locations
Spend some quality time with your precious pooch while helping deserving people obtain canine companionship. In honor of National Dog Day on August 26, join other fitness and dog lovers in Day of the Dog. Whether you run, walk, or jog, just choose your desired distance of one mile, 5K, 10K, half-marathon, or full marathon and complete your event sometime during August or September. You can even "compete" on a treadmill! Fifteen percent of the $18 registration fee, which includes a bib and medal, goes to support Freedom Service Dogs of America.
- Kennebec Valley YMCA - 31 Union St., Augusta, ME 04330
It's easy for the whole family to develop and maintain good fitness habits at the Kennebec Valley YMCA. After a refreshing dip in the family fun pool or the eight-lane lap pool, head to the sauna to unwind. The campus also includes a fully-equipped fitness center with cardio equipment, weight machines and free weights, exercise ball, and an indoor track. Have fun and make new friends with classes in yoga, water aerobics, pickleball, and other group activities. Childcare is available weekdays from 7 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Hours are 5:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Sunday. Visit the website for membership options and prices.
- Bond Brook Recreation Area - 21-25 Bond Brook Rd., Augusta, ME 04330
Mechanical "birds" come and go at the Augusta airport, while birds of the natural kind inhabit adjacent Bond Brook Recreation Area. Prairie warblers, field sparrows, and brown thrashers are some of the species that make the 270-acre grounds such a popular spot for birdwatchers. Mountain bikers like to challenge themselves on the 10 miles of single-track trails. Most of the more difficult features have ride-around options, or they can be avoided entirely by using the double-track, so the trails are appropriate for beginners as well as well as hikers with their leashed dogs. Trails are accessible 24/7 and there's no entrance fee.
