Fall Colors

According to famed French philosopher and author Albert Camus, "Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower." Experience the majestic beauty of the season with leaf-peeping trips to these wonderful locations around the Kennebec Valley that are favorites of our real estate agents

  • Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway
Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway earned its designation thanks to its year-round appeal, but changing leaf colors make it particularly spectacular during fall. Highlights include Moxie Falls, the highest waterfall in Maine, and the Forks, where the Kennebec and Dead Rivers meet. Be sure to check out Lakewood Theater, South Solon Meeting House, and other historic buildings along the way.

  • Maine Wine Trail
Vineyards are often found on picturesque stretches of land, which makes the Maine Wine Trail a natural choice for leaf-peeping. How many of the 29 wineries can you visit? Once you log the sixth stop on your passport, you receive a Winery Guild t-shirt along with an entry to win an exciting grand prize. If you want to make an impromptu trip, Run Amok Mead in West Gardiner, Sea Hag Cider in Rockport, and Oyster River Winegrowers in Warren are all less than an hour's drive from Augusta.

  • Peaks-Kenny State Park - 401 State Park Rd., Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426
Leave the daily grind behind and revive body and soul in the serenity of Peaks-Kenny State Park. The centerpiece of the dog-friendly park's 839 acres is Sebec Lake, a 10-mile-long body of water that was carved out by glaciers approximately 15,000 years ago. Bring a canoe or kayak and take in the spectacular colors from out on the water. Ten miles of hiking trails wind through grounds covered with old-growth hardwood trees, hemlocks, and pines. The park is officially closed during the off-season from October 1 until May 15, but visitors can still access the grounds daily from 9 a.m. - sunset. Admission is $5 per person.

  • Mount Pisgah Conservation Area - Mount Pisgah Rd., Winthrop, ME 04364
Enjoy a stunning bird's-eye view of local color at Mount Pisgah Conservation Area. "Pisgah" is a Hebrew word that translates to "place with a view," which is an apt description of the 1,100-acre grounds. Trails are lined with rocks that were formed from Atlantic Ocean sediment approximately 400 million years ago. Perched atop Mount Pisgah's summit is a 60-foot fire tower, formerly used by the Maine Forest Service, that offers panoramic views from Mount Washington to the Camden Hills. There are no admission fees, and leashed dogs are welcome.

  • Belgrade Drive
Planning a long weekend or a fall staycation? The 120-mile Belgrade Drive loop passes through a delightful cross-section of the small towns and natural features that define Maine. Explore Chick's Apple & Berry Farm in Monmouth, French Mountain in Rome, and other fascinating attractions around the Winthrop Lakes and Belgrade Lakes regions.

  • Thunder Road Farm - 185 Newport Rd., Corinna, ME 04928
Take the family for a leisurely Sunday afternoon drive for some leaf-peeping on the way to Thunder Road Farm. The family-owned farm grows a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that can be purchased in the onsite produce stand, which also offers jams and jellies, relishes, pickles, and decorative pumpkins and gourds. Right across the street is the Corn Maize & Fun Park, with a play area that includes wagon rides, a cow train, and jumping pillow. Hours are 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily, and admission to the Fun Park is $10-$12.
