Ice Skating Augusta

Whether you're heading out for a holiday skate with the family, lacing up the skates for a battle on the ice during hockey season, or perhaps even working on your figure skating moves, there's nothing like an ice skating adventure this time of year. You'll find the very popular Maine Ice Vault just a short drive from Augusta homes for sale, and past years have brought smaller community rinks hosted at local parks as well. Our real estate agents have all of the details on where to go for your ice skating adventures in Augusta in 2024.

  • Maine Ice Vault – 203 Whitten Rd., Hallowell, ME 04347
If you've been searching for ice skating near Augusta, you've likely encountered the page for the Maine Ice Vault. You might also hear it referred to as the Thomas College Ice Vault or the Camden National Bank Ice Vault. Just to clear up any confusion, all three names refer to the same place.

With that out of the way, let's take a closer look at all that this awesome facility has to offer. The state-of-the-art, regulation-size ice rink is the main attraction here and where you're likely to spend most of your time. The facilities also include multiple conference rooms perfect for hosting ice skating parties and a pro shop where you can pick up everything you need to enjoy your time on the ice.

If you're looking for a fun, casual outing with the family, a public skate session might be just the thing. There are typically public skates every day during the afternoon, which are beginner-friendly and open to all ages. All tickets are sold online, so be sure to grab yours in advance before you visit. Skate rentals are available as well, with a limited number of each size available. Looking to teach your kids to skate or perhaps learn yourself? Learn to Skate programs are available for all ages, typically spread over six Saturday sessions.

Interested in even more adventures on the ice? Youth hockey is also popular here, with shinny hockey, youth leagues for kids up to 14 years old, girls leagues, and a Try Hockey for Free program that lets kids get a taste of the sport. They also offer pre-season clinics before youth hockey starts to help new and returning players make the most of their hockey experience.

Through the Skating Association of Maine, the Ice Vault also offers extensive figure skating programs aimed at teaching the fundamentals and growing the sport. Director Mark Ellis, a former competitive skater, oversees the program, which includes private lessons, group lessons, test sessions, clinics, and competitions. There are also Learn to Skate programs for figure skating, structured similarly to the regular skating programs.

  • Community Rink at Mill Park – 2-32 ME-104, Augusta, ME 04330
While 2024-25 dates haven't been announced just yet, in recent years, Augusta Parks & Rec has hosted a Community Rink at Mill Park during the winter, creating the perfect place to relive childhood memories and create some new ones with your own children. The opening date for the rink depends on temperature and other factors, but you can always find the latest at the Augusta Parks & Rec Facebook page linked above. Past years have also included a rink at Williams Park, and we can hope for the same fun this winter.
