Fall is a perfect time for fishing in Maine. As the first pops of gold and orange light up the trees, some of the best fishing of the year begins for bass, trout, salmon, and panfish.
Maine is blessed with thousands of lakes and ponds, and some of the best fishing spots are a stone's throw from the state capital in Augusta. Our real estate agents are excited to share their favorite destinations for fall fishing in the Kennebec Valley.
- Kennebec River - Augusta, ME 04330
Flowing 170 miles from Moosehead Lake to the Atlantic Ocean, the Kennebec River is an exceptional fishery that is minutes away from many Augusta homes for sale. Smallmouth bass are abundant throughout the river, and as its waters cool down in the fall, brown trout fishing also picks up. There are many places to access the river right in Augusta, including Waterfront Park and the Kennebec River Rail Trail, but fly fishing for trout tends to be better upriver, especially in the stretch between Indian Pond Dam and Skowhegan. Tailwaters below dams are prime spots.
- Cobbosseecontee Lake - Winthrop, ME 04364
The massive Cobbosseecontee Lake is known for being one of the best bass lakes in Maine. Anglers commonly target smallmouth bass using jigs and jerkbaits around the lake's many islands and rocky outcroppings, while others cast plastic worms and spinnerbaits around shallow bays and weed beds for largemouth bass. Enormous northern pike also lurk in this 5,534-acre lake's weedy areas. Multiple public launch sites are available. Cobbosseecontee Stream, which connects the lake to the Kennebec River, is also excellent.
- Kimball Pond - Vienna, ME 04360
A relatively small body of water at 55 acres, Kimball Pond offers some of the best brook trout fishing in Kennebec County. Public access with a small launch for canoes and kayaks is located off Kimball Pond Road. The pond is regularly stocked and managed as a cold water fishery, and despite its shallow maximum depth of 19 feet, it supports a thriving brook trout population.
- Upper and Lower Narrows Pond - Winthrop, ME 04364
Less than 20 minutes west of Augusta, Upper and Lower Narrows Pond offer a great mix of warm and cold water game fish, and these diverse waters are excellent in all seasons. Anglers fishing shallow rocks and weed beds can target largemouth and smallmouth bass, while lake trout and landlocked salmon lurk in deeper water. Narrows Pond Road runs directly between the 279-acre Upper Narrows Pond and the 255-acre Lower Narrows Pond, providing bank fishing access to both. There is also a small boat launch on the upper pond, suitable for small craft.
- China Lake - Vassalboro, ME 04989
A 3,939-acre lake east of Augusta, China Lake is made up of two large basins connected by a shallow narrows. It is known first and foremost as one of Maine's best trophy largemouth bass lakes. Few lakes in the state produce more largemouths over 5 pounds, and the best fishing tends to be in the eastern basin, which is shallower and weedier. This section of the lake is also more highly developed, and some of the best fall fishing takes place around the many boat docks that line the shore. Pike and pickerel are frequently caught as well, and deeper waters support modest populations of brook and brown trout.
