fall foliage

Few places in America experience fall foliage that can match Maine's exuberant display of color. From the rugged slopes of the High Peaks to the lush woodlands of the Kennebec River Valley, autumn finds Maine's landscape alight with shades of red, yellow, and gold.

Here in the Augusta area, our real estate agents look forward to the autumn colors all year round. Here's where you can see the best fall scenery near Maine's capital.

  • Howard Hill Conservation Area - Sewall St, Augusta, ME 04330
A beautiful nature area that spans 164 acres, a stone's throw from downtown Augusta, Howard Hill Conservation Area is densely wooded and supports widely varied plant and animal life. Trailheads in both Augusta and Hallowell provide access to a 3-mile trail system that meanders through the conservation areas' hills, ravines, streams, and ridges. In addition to outstanding fall foliage, the trails provide views of the Augusta State House and the Kennebec River.

  • Kennebec Highlands - Mt Vernon, ME 04352
Just 45 minutes north of Augusta, the Kennebec Highlands are part of a 15,000-acre expanse of mostly undeveloped forest and wetland habitat. It's the largest and most diverse forested area in the central part of the state, including McGaffey Mountain and several undeveloped ponds. Many miles of trails crisscross the Kennebec Highlands, providing views of changing mountain foliage and the nearby Belgrade Lakes. The 3.3-mile Round Top Trail is a perfect option for a moderately challenging hike with excellent views.

  • Davidson Nature Preserve - 207 Taber Hill Rd, Vassalboro, ME 04989
Picturesque wetlands, woodlands, and blueberry fields comprise the 97-Davidson Nature Preserve, less than 20 minutes from Augusta in Vassalboro. A popular destination for hiking and nature viewing, the preserve is home to more than 70 bird species, including an active heron rookery. In the fall, the scenery is especially beautiful as the leaves and wetland grasses turn golden. Keep in mind that pets are not allowed in Davidson Nature Preserve.

  • Kennebec River Rail Trail - Front St, Augusta, ME 04330
Connecting Augusta with its neighboring riverside communities of Hallowell, Farmington, and Gardiner, the Kennebec River Rail Trail hugs the western bank of the Kennebec River, following the path of a former railroad line. Augusta's Waterfront Park is a great place to access the trail, which offers beautiful scenery all year round. The trail is flat and well-maintained, open to both bicycles and foot travel.

  • Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary - Wakefield Ln, West Gardiner, ME 04345
Managed by the Kennebec Land Trust, Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary is located 10 miles from Augusta in the rolling hills overlooking Cobbosseecontee Stream. Fall is a great time to visit this charming sanctuary, which offers easy hiking trails through mixed deciduous-evergreen forest, with excellent views of the changing leaves over the water. Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary also offers two eco-cabins, which are available to rent.

  • Androscoggin Riverlands State Park - Center Bridge Rd, Turner, ME 04282
Roughly 40 minutes west of Augusta, Androscoggin Riverlands State Park is one of Maine's largest state parks at 2,675 acres. It includes 12 miles of frontage along the Androscoggin River, and one of the best ways to experience fall color in the park is to canoe or kayak the river as the leaves change. The park also provides beautiful backroads for scenic drives, and an extensive trail network—including part of the larger Androscoggin Greenway—provides additional opportunities to enjoy the park's pristine forests.
