The holidays are upon us here in Maine. And with Thanksgiving just days away, our real estate agents are thinking about how fortunate we are to call this part of the world home.
The holidays are a good time to count one's blessings, but this time of year also offers an opportunity to give something back. Lending a hand to those less fortunate is a big part of what the holidays are all about, and here in Augusta, there are plenty of ways to do just that.
Let's all give a little something back this holiday season. Here's how you can volunteer or donate in Augusta during the holidays.
With roots in Augusta dating back to 1970, Bread of Life is an organization dedicated to helping those in need throughout the capital region. The Bread of Life team maintains over 100 housing units for people in the local community, in addition to serving more than 120 meals every day in their soup kitchen. Bread of Life also provides emergency shelter to families and veterans. Volunteers are always needed to help serve meals at the soup kitchen during the breakfast shift (8 to 10 am) and lunch shift (10 am to 1:30 pm). Learn more about volunteer opportunities here.

A variety of volunteer opportunities are available through the United Way of Kennebec Valley this holiday season. The United Way works with hundreds of donors, volunteers, businesses, and nonprofit partners to help out residents in the Augusta area who struggle to make ends meet. The Salvation Army Capital Region Corps is always in need of volunteers, and this longstanding organization does a lot to help those in need, in Maine and all over the world. In addition to financial gifts and donations of gently used clothing and other household goods, volunteers can also give the gift of their time in a variety of ways during the holiday season, including:
Volunteering at the Kennebec Valley Humane Society is a great way to give back any time of year, but especially during the holidays. The KVHS is looking for volunteers for a variety of essential tasks, including walking dogs, socializing cats, fundraising, and cleanup jobs like dishes and laundry.
