Historic Gardens to visit in Augusta this April | Sprague and Curtis

Augusta, Maine, is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the state, and for good reason. When April rolls around, the best way to see Augusta in full flower is to visit one of its many gardens. Some historic gardens in Augusta are nearly as old as the city itself, and our real estate agents want to help you see them.

Viles Arboretum – Augusta, ME

Viles Arboretum is the largest and most famous free botanical garden in Augusta. With more than 200 acres of recreational trails, all of its facilities are 100% free to access. Although it is open year-round, April marks the busy season at Viles, as many of its flowers and trees are at their seasonal best.

Blaine House – Augusta, ME

Blaine House is a noteworthy historic home built in 1832 and has since become Maine's official governor's mansion. Although governors and their families still live here, it is also a public building you can visit and tour. One of the most memorable features of the home is the garden.

Augusta Nature Education Center – Augusta, ME

Augusta Nature Education Center was originally donated and cared for by founding members of the Augusta Nature Club, the oldest such organization in Augusta. The modern Nature Education Center opened in 1972. Today, it manages more than 115 acres of nature trail land. It is open every day of the year during daylight.

Capitol Park – Augusta, ME

Capitol Park is known as Maine's earliest designed landscape and occupies one of the most picturesque spaces in the city: It extends from the State House nearly to the shore of the Kennebec River. Abutting the State House on a total of 34 acres of land, its stand of elms includes many nearly as old as the park's 1827 founding.

Bicentennial Nature Park – Augusta, ME

A seasonal park that opens from spring through summer, Bicentennial Nature Park stretches across nearly 30 acres of land on the shore of Three Cornered Pond. The pond itself covers about 180 acres and is one of the centerpieces of the China Regional Lakes. It is beloved for its summer fishing.

Wild Gardens of Acadia – Bar Harbor, ME

Found just two miles south of Bar Harbor at the Sieur de Monts Spring and Nature Center, Wild Gardens of Acadia is a part of Acadia National Park. Here, you can explore more than 400 native plant species, meticulously grouped into 13 distinct gardens that represent natural plant communities in the area.
