It's not summer without a trip to the lake. But which lake? There are plenty of beautiful lakes and rivers near Augusta homes for sale, perfect for family camping trips, weekend hikes, and other outings. Here are a few places worth checking out.

Explore Lakes and Rivers Around Maine

Messalonskee Lake - Belgrade, ME

Belgrade, ME 04915

Messalonskee Lake is the perfect place to get away from it all. This 3,691-acre lake is one of seven interconnected Belgrade Lakes, near Belgrade homes for sale. It's a great spot for fishing and is home to:

  • Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass
  • Brook Trout
  • Yellow and White Perch

And much more. If you're into boating, there are three boat launches on the lake, which will allow you to explore it more thoroughly and even visit the six islands inside it, such as Snake, Greely, and Walters. The area is surrounded by pristine freshwater wetlands, making it a terrific spot to escape into nature.

Great Pond - Rome, ME

Rome, ME 04963

The largest of the Belgrade Lakes, Great Pond is reasonably shallow and fairly warm, making it a great spot for swimming. Located near Rome homes for sale, it averages about 75 degrees at the surface, though it drops to 57 degrees at a depth of 65 feet. The warmer temperatures mean there aren't as many sportfish, which tend to thrive in colder waters, but there's still a good selection of bass, trout, and more.

Kennebec River - Augusta, ME

Augusta, ME 04330

One of Maine's longest rivers, the Kennebec River, is a great place for whitewater rafting. It starts at Moosehead Lake and flows over 145 miles, including a stretch near Augusta and the surrounding area. It's very popular among paddlers and rafters, who come from miles around to experience it. Plus, it's home to a variety of native coldwater fish and hosts migratory fish throughout the season.

St. George Lake - Liberty, ME

278 Belfast Augusta Rd, Liberty, ME 04949

If you can't get to Hawaii, head to St. George Lake instead, which contains the island of Hawaii 2. While it's about the furthest thing there is from the tropics, it's not far from Augusta, and the lake itself is beautiful. A picturesque spot for photography, the Lake St. George State Park is great for all sorts of summer activities, including:

  • Canoeing and motor boating
  • Swimming
  • Fishing

Whether you're there to picnic for the day or have a weekend-long camping trip, it's a perfect spot for a family outing.

Penobscot River - Bangor, ME

Bangor, ME 04401

The longest river entirely in Maine is also one of the most beautiful spots in New England. The Penobscot River is 190 miles long, starting in Bangor and flowing throughout the state, through forests, grasslands, farms, towns, and more. It has whitewater areas for rafting, as well as calmer stretches for leisurely canoeing. And it's one of the best fishing spots in the state, featuring plenty of wild brook trout and landlocked salmon, as well as:

  • White Perch
  • Atlantic Sturgeon
  • Chain Pickerel

There are also areas for primitive camping, hiking, and other activities. If you're a fan of beautiful, natural views and don't mind roughing it, it's a perfect spot for a family outing.
