Where to See Fall Foliage Around Central Maine

Mt. Pisgah - Winthrop, ME

One of the best views in Central Maine is from the top of Mount Pisgah. The mountain's 815-foot elevation is accessible via a short, moderately easy hike from the Mt. Pisgah Conservation Area trailhead on Mt. Pisgah Road, just outside of Manchester. The 1.8-mile out-and-back hike rewards visitors with panoramic vistas from atop a 60-foot fire tower, and it's especially striking when the hills and valleys are aglow with fall color. The trek typically takes under an hour.
Kennebec Highlands - Mt Vernon, ME

Encompassing 6,400 acres of public land between Mount Vernon and Rome, the vast and beautiful Kennebec Highlands offer stunning views in any season. The Highlands are home to Kennebec County's highest peaks, including the summit of McGaffey Mountain, as well as miles of scenic drives and hiking trails. Activities for leaf-peepers include:
- Scenic drives on Vienna Mountain Road, a mountain route that offers access to hiking trails including the Berry Hill Road Trail and Kidder Pond Trail.
- Hiking the Round Top Trail, a gorgeous 4.8-mile round-trip hike that starts on Watson Pond Road and provides expansive views from the summit.
Kennebec River Rail Trail - Augusta, ME

The Kennebec River Rail Trail is a flat, easy multi-use path with beautiful fall foliage views in the heart of Augusta. Beginning just footsteps from downtown, the trail follows the western shoreline of the Kennebec River along the path of a former railroad line. Open to hiking, cycling, and other non-motorized uses, the Rail Trail heads southward for 6.5 miles to the city of Gardiner, traversing urban and rural landscapes along the way.
Belgrade Lakes - Belgrade Lakes, ME

The picturesque Belgrade Lakes region encompasses seven freshwater ponds and lakes about 10 miles northwest of Augusta. The lakes offer incredible fall foliage, with stunning views along Highway 27, which runs from Augusta through Belgrade and between Long Pond and Great Pond. While you're in the area, be sure to:
- Paddle the lakes. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available at Central Maine Surf Company.
- Explore The Mountain Trail System.
- Stop for lunch at Day's Store, which has been serving sandwiches, salads, and pizzas since 1958.
U.S. Route 201 Scenic Drive - Augusta, ME

Passing through the communities of Farmingdale and Hallowell before serving as Augusta's main street, U.S. Route 201 is known as one of Maine's most scenic routes. After passing by the Maine State Capitol Building and Capitol Park in Augusta, the route crosses the Kennebec River and continues northward through some of the most picturesque countryside in Central Maine. Eventually, Route 201 becomes the legendary Old Canada Road Scenic Byway, which offers beautiful viewpoints and rich history.
