There are few things as breathtaking as autumn in Maine. Home to over 17 million acres of forest, the state holds the distinction of having more tree-covered land than any other state in America.
Although the peak viewing season varies from year-to-year depending on the weather, those visiting Maine between the last week of September and the third week of October are sure to be wowed by the gorgeous red, gold, and purple hues surrounding them.
One of the most well-known areas to view the fall foliage is Kennebec Valley. With almost 5,000 square miles of wooded area, the valley stretches North to South across much of the state, beginning at the Capitol city of Augusta and ending in the Canadian province of Quebec. Although almost every stretch of the valley offers beautiful views of the changing leaves, some locations are stunning. Our REALTORS® are here to share five of the best places in Kennebec Valley to this year's fall colors.
- The City of Augusta
Augusta attracts many tourists during the summer months. By the time fall rolls around, most of them are gone, making it an excellent time for locals and visitors to enjoy the city without the stress of overcrowding.
While visiting Augusta, plan to spend some time at Viles Arboretum. Here you'll find six miles of winding forest trails and a half-mile walk through the state's largest outdoor sculpture display.
If you have some extra time while you're in Augusta, consider paying a visit to the State Capitol Building, Fort Western, and the Maine State Museum.
- Moxie Falls
You can reach Moxie Falls by taking the Route 201 scenic byway to the Moxie Falls Scenic Area. From here, you can take a short one-mile walk to bask in the wonders of the highest waterfall in Maine. With its a 92-foot drop, the Moxie Falls view is well worth the 20-minute hike. Continue to take the byway North, and you'll not only find yourself in a prime viewing area, but you'll also enter one of the best stretches of road for moose-sightings.
- Peaks-Kenny State Park
Located along the shore of Sebec Lake, Peaks-Kenny State Park is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, boating, and swimming. Pack a picnic lunch and soak in the stunning colors of the changing leaves in this peaceful, wooded setting.
- Rangeley Lakes National Scenic Byway
The Rangely Lakes National Scenic Byway begins on Route 17 and winds through the western mountains of Maine, ending at Rangeley Lakes. Along with this route, you'll enjoy panoramic views of 5 lakes and their surrounding mountains. If you continue along Route 17 to the Height of Land, you'll enjoy the surreal lake, mountain, and forest views.
- Farms and Foliage Tour
To create your own "Farms and Foliage" tour, head up Route 15, making a stop in Sangerville to visit Stutzman's Farm Stand and Bakery. Here you'll find a fresh fruit and vegetable stand, brick-oven pizza, and baked goods. If you make it there on a Sunday, you can also enjoy brunch and live music.
Next, pick up Route 16 and head to the Guilford Memorial River Walk. Here you can picnic, play horseshoes, and take a scenic walk along the water where you're likely to see bald eagles, blue herons, and more.
Stop by the picturesque Lowes Covered Bridge for a beautiful photo opportunity, then make your way to Treworgy Family Orchards. An iconic ending to your perfect autumn day, the orchard offers apple picking, a fantastic corn maze, hayrides, a petting zoo, and horse-drawn farm tours.
