Holiday Decorating

It's time to start thinking about decorating your home for the holidays. If your home is listed among Augusta homes for sale, you will be looking for just the right tone, perhaps going low key this year so as not to be too distracting from showing your home. Luckily, there are still plenty of ways to make your home feel extra cozy this holiday season. Follow these tips to give your holiday decorating a boost this year.

Christmas Tree: Artificial or Fresh?

There's nothing wrong with a fresh green Christmas tree. They have a gorgeous smell, and if you don't let it dry out, it's a wonderful focus for your holiday decor and activities. But artificial trees are hard to beat for convenience. They don't need to be trimmed or watered. You can also find trees that already have the lights artistically arranged. Further, if you've got a super tall space where the tree goes, an extra-tall artificial tree may be easier to find than a fresh one. Take that tree to the next level by decorating it in the following order.

  1. Lights.
Wind the light strands from bottom to top, at even intervals, around the tree. Use one strand for every foot of the tree's height. Be sure to place some lights near the interior of the tree to light up the space within.

  2. Ornaments.
Neutral-colored ornaments might be the way to go in a year when you're trying to tone down the holiday decor. Gold, silver, white or clear are good choices, with a few special ornaments placed here and there to create a theme. Hang them in a zigzag or staggered pattern. Fill in the interior of the tree.

  3. Garlands.
Keep the garland loose rather than taut as you drape it around the tree. With ribbon, twist it to give it a little "movement." Thick ribbon knots and bows may be substituted for the garland.

  4. Tree skirt.
A white or off-white skirt will give your decor a snowy look. The skirt might also match other decor on the tree or around the house. Besides presents, add a few accents, such as nutcrackers, an Advent calendar, toys, a mini Santa, and the like.

Holiday Themes

We mentioned themes above. What does that mean in your home during this holiday season? It could be about color, for instance, emphasizing the red and green with an unusual table cloth -- red and green stripes or plaids come to mind, or red- and green-themed holiday bedding and pillows to get your family in the holiday spirit.  You may want to offset the traditional colors on the table with something that evokes nature and winter, such as pale brown and muted gold in a dried arrangement. Try offsetting reds with pink and silver and greens with pale browns.

Or, you might go for a particular ambiance, such as cozy winter, with a smaller artificial tree covered in artificial snow. Add some homemade stockings (check out Etsy or other online venues), and put out some holiday books in stacks on the coffee table. Plan a Yuletide story-reading session with the kids with cocoa and cookies.
