Ice Fishing Kennebec Valley

Here in the Kennebec Valley, when the snow flies, ice fishing season has just begun!

Just like many local anglers, our real estate agents always look forward to the start of the ice fishing season. The city of Augusta is less than an hour's drive from dozens of lakes and ponds, including some exciting fishing destinations. These are the best ice fishing spots near Augusta homes for sale.

  • Androscoggin Lake - Wayne, ME 04284
About 30 minutes from Augusta, Androscoggin Lake is known for being one of Maine's best fishing lakes year-round. Spanning more than 3,800 acres, Androscoggin Lake is a large body of water but a relatively shallow one. Most of the lake is less than 20 feet deep, and ice fishermen have a lot of success finding perch and pickerel in its weedy bays and coves. The public boat launch site off Route 133 at the north end of the lake is the best place to get out onto the ice.

  • Webber Pond - Vassalboro, ME 04989
Spanning 1,200 acres, Webber Pond is one of the best ice fishing spots in the Augusta area. Warm-water game fish, including largemouth bass, crappie, and pickerel, are most common, but many anglers also catch brown trout through the ice. Some of the most productive fishing spots are Birch Point and the area off the shore of Green Valley Campground. Access the water through the Weber Pond Boat Ramp, which is located on Weber Pond Road, a short drive from these Vassalboro homes for sale

  • Upper Narrows Pond - Winthrop, ME 04364
Largemouth and smallmouth bass are the most common game fish in Upper Narrows Pond, a 279-acre lake in Winthrop. But the most sought-after fish here are landlocked salmon and lake trout, which are stocked by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife. Upper Narrows Pond is just minutes from many Winthrop homes for sale. Although there is no developed access site on the lake, you can get on the ice from Narrows Pond Road.

  • Echo Lake - Mt Vernon, ME 04352
Echo Lake is a 1,185-acre lake that offers some of the region's best ice fishing for landlocked salmon, lake trout—known locally as togue—and brook trout. The area around Turtle Island and Echo Island offers some of the most productive fishing. To get on the ice, head to the boat launch and access site at the north end of the lake on Pond Road, which is close to numerous Mt. Vernon homes for sale.

  • Messalonskee Lake - Sidney, ME 04330
Part of a chain of lakes known as the Belgrade Lakes just west of the Kennebec River, Messalonskee Lake is a great multi-species fishery where you never know just what will be on the end of your line. Many local ice fishermen fish here with live minnows on tip-ups, and common catches include northern pike, pickerel, largemouth and smallmouth bass, brook trout, brown trout, and splake. This 3,500- acre lake is accessible at the Sidney Boat Landing, a stone's throw from these Sidney homes for sale.
