Old Fort Western

Our real estate agents know the Kennebec Valley region is full of surprises. If you're exploring it for the first time, it's tough to even know where to begin! History, culture, and natural beauty all combine to create a uniquely enticing environment where you'll find great Augusta homes for sale.

The Kennebec Valley is dotted with historical locations and heritage sites. Over the years, many of these have been carefully preserved.

Old Fort Western is one of them, and it is not to be missed!

In 1754, the area we now know as Augusta was mostly wilderness.

Old Fort Western was part of the answer.

The blockhouse raised for civil protection back in America's infancy continues to stand today. It was, among other things, the mustering point where troops gathered for Benedict Arnold's fateful failed march on Quebec early in the Revolutionary War. Some 1,100 troops departed from the spot.

In an attempt to surprise the British, the expeditionary force passed through the wilderness of Maine, supported by a second force crossing Lake Champlain into Quebec. The invasion failed, but it added to the legend of Kennebec Valley, and the blockhouse continued to be used.

Since then, this "fort" has had many other purposes:

  • A civilian general store
  • A private residence
  • An inn

More recently, it was converted into a museum that provides historical interpretation and re-enactment pertaining to the various famous moments and visitors that have passed through Old Fort Western. Its 2022 season will mark the 100th anniversary of the premises being used as a "living history museum."

Old Fort Western Offers Seasonal Tours to Thrill Both Kids and Adults

Trained volunteers provide guided tours at Old Fort Western in May, June, July, August, and September. Hours can vary, but most visitors are admitted for less than $10, the cost of an adult ticket. Veterans and seniors are admitted for $8 and children 6-14 for $6. Children under six attend free.

Although Old Fort Western has changed significantly over time, the basic layout of the grounds remains the same. The building has been honored as a National Historic Landmark and holds events and lectures. Topics covered include French privateers, the French and Indian War, and local archaeology.

During a guided tour, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the rich and varied lives people lived in the 18th century. In addition to the historic sites and the beautiful riverfront view, bike trails are also available. The grounds have been made accessible for people with mobility impairments.

For a truly unique and enjoyable experience, there's even a picnic area!

Old Fort Western is just one example of all the many things you can only see right here in the Augusta area. You can make it a full day out with family or friends, as it is only minutes away from other popular attractions. Enjoy the riverwalk and explore the Augusta Greenway Trail.

Visitors from out of town will appreciate that the Augusta State Airport is just a short drive away. Within walking distance is a variety of parks, the Kid's Wall Mural, Viles Arboretum, and even the Capital Area Sports Complex.
